Show will make lake of moab if f power scheme matures if the plans of the southern california edison company which recently filed an application for a power plant on the colorado river are carried out the people of moab says the times independent will either have to follow the example of noah and build an ark or move onto high ground the company according to its estimates filed at washington plans the erection of a dam 1000 feet high at lees ferry on the colorado river such a dam would back up the water of grand river as far as the mouth of the little dolores river at dewey forty miles above this place the grand would be fully feet above its present level at moab should the reservoir be constructed and filled the green river would be backed up to a point some distance above the mouth of price river the stream at the town of green river would be raised feet above its present level thus it appears that practically all of grand county will be a vast lake with the hills forming islands on which the I 1 people can live if they dont like the water the erection of the mammoth dam would back up the waters of both the grand and green rivers to the elevation of feet the application of the california company in its present form seeks permission to send its engineers into the upper reaches of the colorado river and its tributaries tributa ries to make surveys to determine definitely the feasibility of the power scheme and the cost and amount of work that must be done the project was gone over thoroughly by government engineers several years ago and pronounced feasible not only would it provide the greatest power plant in the united states but it would furnish water for the irrigation of acres and would also handle the flood problem of the colorado river which each spring results in serious damage to the imperial valley of california to carry the project to completion would take years it is stated before any water power permits are granted by the government for the development of the water power available in the colorado river a full and exhaustive hearing will be held at washington in order that the government may learn fully of the possibilities of the stream and of the plans purposes the standing etc of the various applicants who are now seeking permits although it seems barely possible that the mammoth power project will be eventually I 1 carried to completion yet it will take an indefinite period to bring the present hazy plans to realization if such ever does happen so there appears to be no immediate cause for alarm alarin if the deluge does come we will have ample warning anyway think of the fine boat rides we will have |
