Show superintendents MEET AT U A meeting of superintendents of the western stations of the U S bureau of mines was held last week at the salt lake city station at the university of utah those present included D A lyon supervisor of stations L H duschak superintendent of the berkeley station C E van barneveld superintendent of the tucson station F K superintendent of the seattle station S C lind acting superintendent of the golden station C P bowie in charge of the san francisco office J 0 lewis chief petroleum technologist P E S leaver metallurgist of the tucson station as well as thomas varley superintendent of the local station and F G moses metallurgist at this station the purpose of the meeting was to jointly discuss the mining and metallurgical work as carried on in the western states to ordinate coordinate co the work and outline future plans for work on metallurgical problems mr of the seattle station was designated to make a preliminary survey of the smoke problem as it exists in salt lake city and confer with the city engineer and aid others relative to the possibility of carrying on investigative work with the idea of eliminating the smoke nuisance here mr J C lewis who is interested te in the oil shale work of the western states was in conference with mr bowie and mr M J gavin also of the san francisco office and stationed at salt lake city at present and also with dr W D donner bonner of the university of utah it if sufficient itne rest is found among those engaged in the legitimate development of oil the bureau of mines will endeavor to obtain from congress a fund for making a thorough investigation of this latest resource the visitors remained in the city during the week visited the various mining smelt ing and milling plants in the vicinity of salt lake city all the gentlemen mentioned thoroughly inspected the labra laboratories of the local bu reau and department of metallurgical research at the university and were greatly impressed with the buildings laboratories and equipment that were furnished by the university of utah for the operative cooperative co work 0 |
