Show to manufacture P pis I 1 g iron I 1 in n utah with the exception of the lake superior region utah can lay claim to the possession of the largest deposits of iron ore to be found in the united states while the utah ore carries a higher percentage in its iron content that is accredited to any other deposit in the united states the existence of the great fields of iron ore in this state principally in iron and washington counties has been known for many years and numerous have been the attempts to call the attention of iron and ana steel manufacturers to the wonderful possibilities ties offered for the establishment of and manufacture in this western field but it is different now conditions have changed during the last few years however and it is different now railroads have modified their ideas concerning the long haul for the construction and utilization of the panama canal has revolutionized the question of shipping and has put a different aspect upon the long haul equation and to such an extent that the leading lines are now paying more attention to local traffic the attitude of the government also has helped solve the ques 0 N ks 4 wa 7 t 5 L dpn J ad 4 W oka iron trappings Crap crop pings in the iron springs section iron county utah furnaces in this section for the reduction of the crude ore into pig iron and its ultimate manufacture into steel and fabricated commodities modi ties for industrial uses and while the superior character of this iron ore and its existence in almost unlimited quantity have long been admitted by those in touch with tile the iron industry conditions were not ripe for the establishment of plants in utah for the manufacture of the crude material into pig iron for one reason the railroads clung to the long haul idea and fought the establishment of an industry in the far west that might and proba bIlY would abridge the tonnage from the east to the west while steel manufacturers refused to extend their operations as to include opportunities off offered ered in the west and made every eff effort ort to stifle competition by those favorable to the the manufacture of iron idea of attempting intermountain region e ven even and steel in this going so far it is stated as to stand between capital and the promoter of iron de tion as to whether or not the manufacture of essentials shall be centralized or whether heavy costs shall be eliminated by tile the production of commodities in sections in or near where they can be utilized thus eliminating the costs of long hauls and the protracted and needless use of railroad equipment and the manufacture of pig iron in utah would not only assist in making this needful saving but would also result in building up an important industry in this state that would result in an increase of population and also increase our wealth pro capacity while adjoining states would also be greatly bene fitted iron produced years ago iron was produced in utah years ago they say that necessity is the mother of invention and it is a matter of history that the ear early ay pioneers of utah were compelled to provide some of the necessities of industrial life by the manufacture of commodities which chic h could not be brought into this desert country from the far east iron was one of these essentials and when the great deposits of iron were discovered in iron county the pioneer settler undertook to separate the crude metal from its gangue and to accomplish com this built crude beehive furnaces at iron city in the very midst of the iron fields some fifteen or twenty miles from cedar city in the mountains back of which great coal measures exist coke was produced from this coal and charcoal from the mountain cedars so abundant in the iron region and with this fuel iron was produced in the beehive furnaces at iron city john taylor established a foundry and pattern shop and from the pig iron many articles for domestic and rural use were manufactured in southern utah today old dwellings have grates jn in their fireplaces fire places which were manufactured at iron city and even in salt lake city relics of these early efforts to supply the needs of articles requiring iron and steel in their manufacture can be found at this time it is not necessary to go into the details of the great ambition which animated the people of southern utah regarding the ultimate and we might say the immediate utilization of the great deposits of iron ore existing in their midst but it might be well to state that their plans embraced the building of a railroad to bridge the gap between iron city and cedar and that the realization of their dreams had materialized to such an extent that a locomotive and a large amount of rails for the construction st ruction of the road had been hauled from pioche nevada to cedar city forseen unforeseen Un circumstances however interfered with further operation in this line and the scheme was afterward abandoned but the hope of some day seeing the establishment of an industry that would result in the use of the iron ore upon a large scale has always been cherished and nourished the growing use of steel never before in the history of the united states has there been such an urgent need in the use of steel locally the supply falls far short of the demand while on the coast in shipbuilding and other uses the demand has hag assumed enormous proportions at the present time practically all of the steel consumption on the pacific coast is by shipments from the east of course steel consumption on the coast is above normal and the requirements there at the present time represent a total of tons bf steel yearly still the impetus in given all industries because of the war will most likely be long lived and no doubt exists but that this supernormal super normal condition will be maintained for many years to come and no good reason can be cited why utah should not be able to supply a large portion of the pig iron necessary to maintain ship building operations on the coast and other allied industries thus saving about 70 per cent in freight from the east and the needless utilization of rolling stock in the long haul from coast to coast quantity and quality of iron the long neglect of the use of the iron deposits of southern utah has not bee been n due to the fact that the iron was lacking in either quantity or quality as already intimated for it is estimated that in the vicinity of iron springs there exists from five hundred million to one billion tons of crude iron ore which can be most economically mined and loaded onto cars and the deposits of ore can be traced south a distance of approximately sixty miles into bull valley section of washington county while analyses of about samples from various sections of the iron springs or iron city section discloses the fact that the metallic content of the ore averages per cent which is higher than the lake superior or alabama products as is demonstrated by the following table prepared from recent reports from the three fields utah L S ala iron metallic silica 1344 phosphorus 1216 37 lime and magnesia 1620 water above copper sulphur 07 manganese carbonic acid 1224 open hearth furnaces it is stated that utah people own 80 per cent of the iron deposits of southern utah and it is claimed that these could have found purchasers for their holdings if but willing that the iron ore should g go 0 to coast points for reduction to their credit be it stated these offers were refused while upon only one condition would capital be allowed to come in and share in the operation and development of these great measures of potential wealth and this was that furnaces should be constructed somewhere in utah for the manufacture of pig iron the iron to go to the pacific coast and the orient if need be for fabrication only steel for local consumption to be manufactured in utah and it would seem that the idea is chrystal izing for tentative plans already exist for the construction of a plant of 2500 tons daily capacity somewhere on the shore of utah lake in utah county the selection of this site is due largely to the fact that the water supply ne needed e ded 1 in n th the e operation of blast furnaces must bp be large while such a centralized location would bring the plant in near proximity to the coal fields of carbon county the products of which are noted for thir excellent coking qualities while limestone another requirement abounds in unlimited quantities in the surrounding country coke ovens at the furnace it is proposed also to cobl construct omens ovens on the lake shore for the oke coke 61 manu fac ture of coke for furnace requirements the ti ovens to be of the byproduct by product type one of 0 f the urgent reasons for the manufacture 0 coke in the immediate vicinity of the then posed furnace is that it is necessary tote to near a ready market for the great quanta ties of gas resulting from coke manufacture 1 authorities claiming that in the manefa manu fac ture of one ton of coke cubic feet of of J t gas is generated which can be utilized farj I 1 i fuel and illuminating purposes purpose S ir in n nearly ea r b cities and towns and at a f figure gure much ie be low the rate now charged by the i jurers of gas for industrial and domestic uses Far Reaching effects far reaching results should accrue from the establishment of furnaces for the manu facture of pig iron in utah this will mean the establishment of a great industry whose tentacles will extend into nearly every avenue of trade and industry and which will give employment to thousands and mean the establishment of hundreds of pew new indus tries which will spring up which will mean much to the state locally foundries will be established for the manufacture of commodo tie tiel t s needed for home use while the operation of coke ovens as outlined will mean that many products byproducts by will result from coke manufacture that are valuable and which in turn can be manufactured into commodities of great commercial value one of these is which is one of the ingredients entering into the manufacture of the powerful explosive T N T so much in demand ly the war department at the present time to utilize these products byproducts by great chemical works will in all probability b be e established the sh shores ores of utah near the coking plant on lake and as a result of the e establishment of blast furnaces in the state for th the e r manufacture ani of pig iron a galaxy of new enterprises will bud and blossom until the whole country wil feel the benefits of this great industry |
