Show wyoming wyoma e ng s si sixteen eteen oil oi ol 01 fi fields eld S CASPER RECORD during the past three years the state of wyoming has taken rank as one of the important high grade oil producing states in the union this comes at a time when the production of most of the high grade oil was not being beant materially increased and during a national crisis when the public mind is seriously considering our future supply of petroleum in the light of increased consumption which is certain to take place in a mineral of such vital importance as petroleum in the present acts of war A considerable amount of publicity has been given to this as well as other light oil producing fields there has also been much speculation on the part of oil men and prospective investors as to the number location relative size extent and future durability of the wyoming fields to some of these questions time alone can give the final answer however there are certain basic factors entering into the problem which if thoroughly considered will throw much light on the part which wyoming oil fields are destined to play in the future supply of high za grade petroleum during the early development of the oil resources of wyoming most of the capital which was necessary for this exploration was supplied by foreign and local investors bui but within the past two years a number of the larger mid continent companies who have acquired holdings in the state are searching out and making extensive tests of all the likely geologic structures there are six large producing oil fie fields ids in the state ten newer and smaller fields and about one hundred structures which present more or less favorable conditions for the accumulation of oil and there are ten trunk pipe lines already constructed aggregating over miles of line in addition to these about miles of additional pipe lines is proposed some of which will probably be constructed during the present summer there are four large refineries two at casper and two at greybull one small refinery at cowley and a carbon plant near that place which has recently been put in operation several smaller refineries are now anticipated and some are actually being constructed much of the state of wyoming con consists fists of isolated mountain ranges surrounded by deep structural basins around the margins of these large structural basins minor folding has taken place resulting in the formation of anticlines anti clines and domes which afford favorable conditions for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial quantities these larger s structural truc tural basins are the big horn basin located in the north cen aral part the wind river basin in the ce cen aral part the powder river basin mccu OT dying the northeast part and the laramie ir I 1 basin which covers the south central part i of the state another large structural pro pr 01 vince where some exploration is now being d I 1 carried on may be termed the so called di t red desert or great divide basin lying be en tween the towns of rawlins and rock springs the greatest development in wy oming thus far has taken place in the southwest portion of the powder river basin the big horn basin and the wind river C basin I 1 in the big horn basin province seven I 1 1 oil fields of greater or less extent have been discovered and three commercial gas fields and there are at present known to exist about thirty seven seve n structures which present more or less favorable geological conditions for prospecting |
