Show NO RELIEF fofi FOR MINERS it is the opinion of thomas L mccarthy of salt lake president of the liberty manganese company who returned late in december from washington and other eastern centers that the conference called by the american mining congress between government representatives and the leading producers of manganese pyrite and chrome has by no means cleared up the situation or afforded any definite hope for speedy relief mr mccarty said that a fair consensus of opinion was that the present and recently enacted war materials bill was virtually ineffective and that the influential senators and representatives of both parties held to the view that special legislation by congress would be required to bring the producers of the metals named any speedy relief or return for the money they had already expended at the same time the opinion is stated to prevail that the present congress has so much work ahead that there is little hope that special legislation bearing on this question can be carried through the conference said mr mccarty was attended by manganese pyrites and chrome producers from twenty six states by director van H manning of the bureau of mines by J A spurr chairman of one of the leading committees of the mining branch of the war industries board senator king of utah a number of other western senators and representatives and james F call breath secretary of the american mining congress director manning in the course of the proceedings expressed the view that the relief contemplated by the war minerals bill could come only through special legislation but added that no one seemed to have a clear understanding of how and when this legislation could be enacted no one in washington said mr mccarty can or will make a definite statement as to where the responsibility lies or as to how so large a surplus of manganese got into this country from brazil there is to MY mind a lack of clear understanding of the situation while the quotations on manganese are not lower now than during the last few weeks mr mccarty said that there is no market at all for manganese t simply because no one is buying it being a case of waiting to see what the outcome would be virtually all of the manganese producers of the country have ceased oDd operations rations feeling that they oan call do nothing until some market for their product is assured |
