Show DEATH OF HON THOMAS KEARNS the whole west was shocked on the dinst to learn of the death of former senator thomas kearns of salt lake city for many years mr kearns has been identified with the mining and industrial development and growth of utah and salt lake and in his death this community has suffered an irreparable loss in many respects he was a self made man beginning life as a poor boy and working hi his s way up until he became widely known as one of the most successful mining operators in the west while lie he accumulated a fortune and at times held positions of high trust bestowed upon him at the hands of the people he was very early identified with the history of the great silver king mine at park city and he was interested in numer A hon thornas kearns ous mining enterprises throughout this intermountain ter mountain region he was also successfully engaged in industrial pursuits and in railroad building the splendid keams building on main street is a monument to his untiring efforts to build up his home city and his palatial residence on south temple is the admired by all beholders he was also associated with one or more inore banking institutions and was held in high esteem by his business associates while he friend and supporter of was always a warm the laboring man from whose ranks he sprung the deceased was really in the p prime rime of his vigorous life when he answered the last call being only fifty six years of age an age for such a man when extensive expert I ence and calm reflection has we well 11 fitted him to serve his fellowmen fel to the best advantage up to a few days before his death he was well with every indication that life for him could well be occupied for twenty years to come A week or so before his death lie he was the victim of a slight automobile accident which confined him to his home unexpectedly he suffered an attack of apoplexy but this was not considered serious and it was hoped that he would soon be convalescent and out and around again the end came quickly however and surrounded by his family he sank to rest peacefully and trustingly mr kearns during the early days of statehood for utah was actively interested in politics and was a member of the constitutional tut ional convention which framed the constitution ution adopted by our people for a term of years he represented utah in the united states senate and in and out of office he was always an ardent worker for measures calculated to benefit our commonwealth all the while being noted for his charity and for his donations for charitable purposes the mining review mourns the loss of a citizen and friend possessed of so many excellent qualities of mind and heart and joins with legions of his friends in extending words of condolence and sympathy to his afflicted and bereaved family 0 |
