Show GREAT GENERATOR FOR JOPLIN joplin mo june 9 the largest piece shipment ever handled by an american railroad recently arrived in joplin from new york and as a result the mines in this district that have been wanting to operate electrically tri cally and have been unable to do so through inability of the empire district to furnish current will soon have their wants along this line satisfied the shipment is an electric generator weighing pounds that was purchased some time ago by the empire company from the brooklyn edison electric illuminating company of new york it came to joplin on the largest freight car probably in the world a car owned by the pennsylvania railroad company and completed by them last february the generator was a real problem of transportation there were plenty of cars that would carry as much weight as pounds and there were plenty of others of less capacity that could take care of the piece of machinery as to bulk but for some time none could be found that could take care of pounds of baggage of such large size as was presented in this generator and when the pennsylvania car finally was procured it was necessary to make the trip by a roundabout way to bring it here from new york in order that tunnels and low bridges might be avoided work already has been started to get the big generator in place at the riverton plant of the empire district companas comp anys plant at riverton and the job will be rushed as the plant at present is carrying more load than it really was intended to carry |
