Show new dividend payer the south hecla mining company under the management of col george H watson entered the long list of dividend payers of utah on august when it disbursed 15 cents a share or a total of 39 the company was a heavy shipper early in the year before the spring thaws broke up the roads but during the summer had to be contented with about fifty tons daily owing to the general orders of the smelters shelters sm elters to all properties to curtail shipments the early storms of the winter also interfered with the movement of ore and it was found necessary to store enormous quantities until the roads could be placed in condition again the company has several times had as much as tons in its bins and slopes awaiting a chance to get it to market the ore has come mainly aro from the and levels on each of which the companas comp anys famous wedge fissure has haa been opened extensively the two main ore shoots on this fissure have been developed for hundreds of feet along their strike and to a width up to more than fifty feet no 1 has been followed more than 1000 feet showing an average width of eighteen feet and average assays essays of IS 18 ounces silver 10 per cent lead 7 per cent zinc and 60 cents gold no 2 has been opened feet along its strike and proven to a depth of more than feet averaging about twenty feet in thickness it carries 28 ounces silver 8 per cent lead 5 per cent zinc and 70 cents gold the ore is a carbonate another important body is on the kate hays fissure on the quincy tunnel level where the ore has been opened for a distance of more than feet averaging fifteen feet wide and giving average assays essays of approximately 20 ounces silver 11 per cent lead 6 per cent zinc and some gold the company has let several leases during the year all of which have opened shipping ore the principal ones are fields stewart alta michigan mines company and the international ter national exploration company all on the kate hays fissure and curley brain on the skipper fissure the property is now undergoing an extensive campaign of development work the expectation of the management being that by early spring there will be a dozen or more places in the mine from which direct shipping ore will come the company owns about acres nearly all patented and it is estimated that less than 10 per cent of it has been prospected and developed south hecla extension during the spring the south hecla heck i extension mining company was formed by the interests back of the south hecla to develop a group of claims lying to the south of the latter property the work is under the direct management of col watson who is a heavy stockholder in the new company it is I 1 being developed by means of a tunnel I 1 from the west no 3 drift off the quincy level of the south hecla with the jones paddock and other fissures as the objective of the work the company has prosecuted development steadily since incorporating in a quiet way and evidently without any wish for publicity ore hay has been opened on the ground and it is reported at this writing that the company will begin shipping in the near future and that consignments consign ments of ore will be sent out regularly after they are started this is regarded as one of the most promising groups in the entire district michigan utah in good shape j the michigan utah consolidated mines I 1 seventy three claims more than naif of which are patented and covering the entire eastern part of the alta section up to november the total shipments were slightly more than tons valued at transportation troubles were encountered during the last two months of the year but during a large part of that time the company managed to send out about sixty tons a day over its aerial tramway to tanners flat and from there by team to the railroad at wasatch practically all of the ore shipped has come from the lease of the triangle leasing company which is working the ground above the old city rocks and grizzly tunnel levels another lease of note is that of douglas C despain and associates who are working in the solitude tunnel on the big cottonwood side of the property mr air despain despalj is an experienced operator in the district and has opened a showing of exceptionally high grade ore in his lease it is probable that he will install a hoist on the city rocks level and send out his ore by that ave avenue n ue and thence over the tramway which will enable him to ship throughout the winter most of the company work has been confined to the copper prince tunnel which is about feet below the older workings which are now under lease this tunnel has been extended 1200 feet since last spring and is now in a distance of more than 1700 teet it has opened a good showing of high grade copper ore which has already been drifted upon for a considerable dis distance tance and which is expected to prove an important source of revenue to th the e company it is said that the december and had but a short distance more to go to reach the first fissure vein this will be drifted upon southeasterly the worx work prospecting the vein at a depth up to feet it will also open the junctures of the main north south system of fissures with the cross fissures which have produced high in the surface workings and which will undoubtedly mean important developments at depth the ground is well spoken of in the district and is said to be the making of another mine hellgate Hell gate gets ore another company which has every chance to make good is the hellgate Hell gate mining company which was incorporated in salt lake on february ath and finished its organization and commenced work on its claims late in august the company owns tile the hell gate group located west of the wasatch mines ground and undoubtedly crossed by the same vein system as this famous producer it also contains in its environs a section of the cardiff lime quartzite contact and is probably crossed by the cardiff fault plane tile the company started a tunnel on the ground as tile the first work of development the work being let to john mattson under contract this thi s tunnel opened a vein within a short distance and was turned to follow the ore work had to be suspended at tile time the contract was finished owing to the fact that the company has no suitable buildings for the winter months but the feet completed has opened a good showing and entirely justifies the management in its high hopes for next summer work will vill be resumed in dj the spring the company is incorporated for shares of 1914 was the opening gun in the mining prosperity which has existed in utah ever since that time has gone ahead with the development of its property and the payment of dividends without making any great noise the management has expressed a desire to avoid publicity and though the mining review has received several inquiries regarding developments there it has been difficult to learn anything definite it was announced early in the summer that the had been developed along its strike for a distance of feet had been crosS crosscut CUL for distances up to fifty feet and raised upon for feet A whize had proven it for a distance of feet below the main tunnel level and a drift at the bottom of the had been extended forty feet all these workings were still in ore during october it was reported that another great deposit had been opened in tile the property and officers of the company were quoted as saying that in their opinion ion tile the new would prove to be of as great dimensions as the first one the new shoot was stated to be at a point about feet west of the alie main body the company has had many and varied troubles with mu transportation of its ores to the valley and a great many difficulties have been thrown throw in its way which are unusual owing to the fact that tile the road down big cottonwood canyon is the main highway to brighton the and to the further big summer resort of utah fact that the water from the canyon is a part of salt lake cites water system horse drawn vehicles cause pollution and that in turn causes open war between tile the mining interests and the city A large part of tile the problem is said to have been solved of quad trucks for the by the recent use hauling the company has paid three dividends during the year each of 25 26 cents per
