Show REVISION OF MINING LAWS the american mining congress at its nineteenth annual session which opens in hotel la salle chicago november will endeavor to definitely formulate the long sought for and long fought for revision of the mining laws of the colinta country dr foster of illinois chairman of the house committee on mines and mining will be in attendance and will report on the actual progress made on this subject by congress giving the objections raised to many of the contemplated changes and his ideas idea s as to what can be passed through both houses of congress the battle has been a long and hard one but the american mining congress ihas has a record of successes that mark it a great power for remedial good in the mining field east and west the first appeal made by the american mining congress for a bureau of mines was backed by less than one twelfth of the members of the house of representatives but on may kay 16 1910 the bill was signed by the president and on february 25 1913 1911 0 an amended bill was signed covering more particularly the western situation since that time the efforts of the american mining alining congress have been directed in part to securing adequate appropriations for the work of the bureau and this struggle lias has been no easy one but on the whole extremely satisfactory the greatest work of the american mining congress is however along the lines of planning legislation which provides greater safety for the lives of the men engaged in coal and metal mining operations the results of legislation initiated by the american mining congress has reduced by nearly onelia one half lf the number of men lulled per million tons of coal produced acting on the humanitarian impulse created by this movement of the american mining ining Nl congress the big organizations of the country have almost without an exception introduced the splendid safety first efforts which have been so productive of good results everywhere the american mining lining IN congress has secured the adoption of laws by many states east and west making misrepresentation of mining stocks a misdemeanor it has prepared comprehensive laws for the use of electricity in mines that which applies to coal mining operations has been adopted as a whole by the sta state teof of pennsylvania and has been considered by other states its model law for the creation of mine drainage districts its work for substantial aids to state mining sen its protests against federal interference with water power its comprehensive investigation of mine taxation are but a few of the facts which the american mining congress has so successfully espoused |
