Show GEOLOGY OP OF WILLARD formations in new gold camp in humboldt county nevada by J carlton bray E M so much has been said both for and against the ore deposits of willard that a few remarks on the geology of the district may be acceptable to the formation cranks the country rock is a series of calcareous and impure thin bedded lime stones belonging probably to the star peak formation and probably of jurassic age fossils indicating either jurassic or late triassic strata have been found on the agitator claim these dip from 25 to almost 90 degrees west and southwest and strike from north to northwest they are highly metamorphosed and altered by the intrusion of numerous large dykes and sills of basic igneous rocks there lias has been much discussion as to the number and nature of these rocks but there are at least two and perhaps three different intrusions the last of these is is undoubtedly basalt but many abear to be andesite although they are so highly altered that thorough study will be necessary to properly classify them veins occur on the contacts of the dykes but the majority of them lie in the near the dykes which they either parallel or intersect the veins are of the nevada type and are either or replacement veins all show considerable movement and are remarkably regular on both strike and dip for this class of vein the filling consists of altered wall rock cemented with quartz calcite and fluorite containing gold and silver together with a little manganese and iron oxides at surface the sulphides sulp hides consist of pyrite and argentite the gold is free the quartz is typical chalcedonic quartz of the late tertiary veins of nevada A study of the structure of the district shows that the veins will continue in iii the same rocks for considerable depth and there is positively no reason to fear that they will not go down there has been very little erosion since they were formed which accounts for the fact that they show better in the gulches than high on oil the hills the large area of the district and great number and size of the veins together with the high values at surface lead any fair minded engineer to the conclusion that nevada has added another fine camp to its list of producers in winnemucca star ak V n |
