Show USE BUSINESS METHODS the office work connected with the larger mining companies is kept up in good shape in fact that important item of the business receives the same attention that it does with any great corporation it is seldom that a mistake creeps in and carelessness is unknown but some of the com banies operating prospects and undeveloped mines show a woeful lack of business methods in dealing with both employees and stockholders these cases are often called to our attention and a particularly glaring one came up last month A company owning ground in a nearby camp has its offices in a small new eng land town it may be an advantage to 10 lo cate the office several thousand miles away from the property and from a majority of the stockholders if not of the shares shareef but there are good arguments against it however the western stockholders received assessment ses notices recently just three days before the levy was to become delinquent strange as it may seem some were willing to pay and sent checks or money up to this writing a month later no acknowledgments or receipts have been received from the office but last week notice of another assessment reached them and again just three days before delinquency to make the matter worse the company is not working the ground at present and has not for several years no explanation is sent as to the reason for these assessments nor for what purpose the money is to be used it is little wonder that statements are going the that all is not entirely aboveboard with the officers however the mining review happens to know that the money thus raised is to be used for paying off liens against the properties secured through the courts on cases long pending little comment is necessary here it is simply a matter of carelessness on the part of the directors that such notices are not mailed in time it is also an absolute injustice to the stockholders further it would cost only a nominal amount to mail a statement to each owner of stock stating the purpose of the levy and incidentally thanking him for his support the man or woman who advances money for the development of a mine or prospect is certainly entitled to some consideration from the officers and the goodwill good will of stockholders is an asset valuable to any corporation we hope that directors in other companies will read of this case and think over the way it appears to those not informed of the facts and also of the false light h in which carelessness or ignorance of bus business methods is placing the directors of this and certain other mining propositions |
