Show fellowship IN metallurgy by an act of the legislature of the state of utah which became effective july 1913 there was established in connection with the state school of mines a department of the university of utah a mp cical research department the particular purposes for which this department desart ment was established are the finding of ways and methods of profitably treating low grade ores of securing a higher percentage of extraction of meta metals Is from their ores of obtaining other information that shall have for its objective the benefit of the mining y industry and the utilization and conserva tion of the mini eral resources of the state and to publish and distribute bulletins and articles relating to the department and its work j at j by an agreement with the united states bureau of mines the work of this department is under the direction of metallurgists of the bureau assigned to duty at the of university and salt lake city since january 1914 mr D A lyon metallurgist has been in charge of the work assisted by other members of the metallurgical staff of L the bureau assigned to duty at salt lake city and with headquarters at the university since that time mr 0 C ralston assistant metallurgist for the bureau and J F cullen chemist have also been been assigned i to the work to in connection with this new dep department ar t m e n t there have been established five research fellowships fellowship s in metallurgy each having an annual value of these fellowships are open to college graduates who have had a good training in chemistry and metallurgy and applications for them will be received up to may 1915 applicants should send a copy of their records from the registrars office of the college where they have or will be graduated and the names and addresses of at least three references who know their character ability and attainments As was to be expected the first year was largely devoted to making a preliminary survey of the state for the purpose of determining the nature and extent of the low grade ore bodies of the state after this a study was made of the literature and of the processes which it was thought it might b be possible to apply to the solution of the problems with which the department has to deal at this time these problems are as follows 1 A study of the flotation processes in order to determine their applicability to the treatment of ores which are not at the present time being treated by such processes 2 the roasting and leaching of ores 3 the recovery of precious metals in the presence of interfering elements such as copper 4 the separation of lead and zinc ores and the recovery and conservation of the large amount of zinc that is lost in mining milling and smelting smelling sm elting operations the work of this department is twofold two fold naturally the first aim is to obtain information which may be of value in the solution of the problem of the treatment of low grade and complex ores the other is to acquaint those holding fellowships with the methods which are necessary in conducting investigations of this kind and to permit them to gain such knowledge of the subject by reason of their work as to enable them to take up work along similar lines for private concerns after the termination mi nation of their fellowships due to the fact that salt lake city and vicinity is one ot of the chief nonferrous non ferrous metallurgical centers of the united states and that the work taken up is of a practical nature that is has to do with the solution of definite problems the university believes that these fellowships offer a splendid spier did opportunity port unity to young men intending to enter the metallurgical metallurgic 11 to thoroughly familiarize themselves with up to date metallurgical practice especially in ill the treatment of nonferrous non ferrous cresp ores and to become proficient in the adaptation of ct those pieces groces ses which may be in line with the investigation ti carried on by them in connection with their work I holders of these fellowships hips will be sub ab tv V 1 jfe eject to the rules governing employees of the national bureau of mines and will report for duty july 1 1915 they must also register as students in the university of utah and become candidates for the degree of master of science ce in metallurgy unless this or an equivalent degree has been previously earned their clas cla s work will vill be directed by the heads of the departments of instruction and their laboratory work as previously stated by metallurgists of the bureau of mines fellows are appointed for one year but the appointment may be renewed address applications to jos F merrill director of the utah state school of mines salt lake city |
