inspection of the united copper and copper king mines at chewelah Chew elah washington made in company with a party of seventy five spokane mining men and business men who conducted an excursion to the copper camp sixty miles north of here that the chewelah Chew elah camp is even better than reported is the opinion generally expressed by those who made the trip james A duff mining editor of the spokesman review and a man whose views on mines art are well received in mining circles issued the following signed statement first reports of new strikes in mining properties even though they come from conservative sources usually are regarded as over optimistic but that the statements of conditions in the united copper and copper king properties at chewelah Chew elah in both of which important discoveries were made in the lower workings recently were well within the limits of fact was proven to the spokane excursionists who visited the mines with the expedition were several mining engineers among them F A ross of spokane and alfred mcmillan Mcl Millan manager of the smelter at northport North port and both agreed that the assertions of president conrad of the united states company and president S P domer bomer of the copper king company were more than cor ro borated by careful examination of the th 1 showings in the workings 1 the visitors were taken through the th united copper mill and into the long low f er tunnel by president who gave them every opportunity to make a thorough inspection of both the mill now is ig treating about seventy five tons of ore daily and the crude shipments are about awen ty five tons the material coming from the north and south drifts from the lower tunnel and the raise to the COO foot level approximately feet of new workings have been driven since april 1 and tuesday afternoon the men in the raise reported that they were breaking through into the foot level there are sixty five men employed now in the mine and mill but in a few days thirty five more will he be added and the output increased to tons daily tons of milling ore the limit of treating facilities at present and seventy five tons of shipping ore the completion of the raise will connect the lower tunnel with the surface a shaft already being down to the foot level and will provide excellent ventilation for the entire mine besides permitting the ore from the upper workings to be dropped to the main tunnel in which an electric haulage system will be installed as soon as possible superceding superseding super ceding the mule power now employed transporting the ore to the mill and storage bins it also will be possible to devote all the air from the compressor to operating the drills and the full complement of fifteen machines will be in service in a short time the company contemplates sinking a shaft from the lower tunnel to the 2000 foot level and work will begin soon it is planned to have the finished to the 1500 foot level where a station will be cut not later than december 1 the visitors to the copper king mine who had hoped to see the new oil burning smelter in operation were disappointed the plant was started tuesday morning but it was found necessary to shut it down just before they arrived in the afternoon to attach new gears to increase the speed of the blower J J anderson of the anderson oil smelter company who is su intending per construction stated that the initial run indicated that the smelter the first of the kind to be built in the northwest would be a success the visitors were escorted through the workings by president as S P domer and superintendent E 1 ml spedden who say that over tons of ore now are ready for treatment in the smelter which will handle tons daily and that assays essays show that it will average not less than 5 0 per cent copper the mine will be electrified and the machinery driven by electrical energy as soon as a transmission line can be built built from the united copper mill about il a mile distant current to be supplied from t the 1 power station at meyers falls which I 1 W was as taken over recently by president conrad I 1 of the united copper company the no 1 tunnel of the copper king is in 1000 feet the face having a vertical depth of feet and the no 2 tunnel is an in 1300 feet tapping the Pre ore bodies feet below the no 1 level A raise from the ahe lower workings to the surface gives adequate ventilation and provides facilities for handling the ore through the lower level there are three veins exposed in the lower tunnel the first fifty seven feet I 1 wide and the second and the third eight feet each in width the visitors were royally entertained at the property of the security copper company of which J F mcginnis of hillyard is president and L K armstrong of spokane general manager this is coming to be regarded as among the most promising properties in the chewelah Chew elah camp and it is anticipated that it will be shipping soon A A half mile road connecting with the main thoroughfare into chewelah Chew elah was completed to the mine recently and five men now are employed doing development work A hoisting plant adequate for service to 1000 feet depth and a two drill compressor operated by a distillate engine have been installed and the company contemplates continuing the shaft now down sixty feet to still lower levels we have three veins showing on the property states manager armstrong one is thirty feet wide one fifty feet wide and the other has been crosscut for eighty feet without encountering the hanging wall the high grade ore is as good as any discovered in the chewelah Chew elah district and the mill feed also is of good quality |
