Show WESTERN MINING MININ G DISTRICTS the united states west of the meridian comprising the rocky mountain desert and sierra nevada regions is one of the most important producers of precious and allied metals in the world within this area are many mining regions or camps where are known as mining districts in most of the states the boundaries of these districts are well recognized some of them are legally recorded and nearly all can be plotted on state maps with a fair degree of accuracy in the mother lode country of california however there are no mining districts in the sense that the term is used in the other states the output of the mines in the united states is reported yearly to the division of mineral resources of the united states geological survey and by a study of the district reports for a number of years the values of the most important metals pro deuced in each district can be fairly wel determined in some districts notably those in colorado the values of several products are nearly equal but in most of the districts the output of one metal has a greater value than that of the rest bulletin mining districts of the western united states by J M hill contains a revised edition of a western states map together with much new material and is an index of the gold silver copper lead zinc quicksilver iron and ra rare metal mining districts of the western states A geologic introduction to this report by waldemar lindgren gives a general summary of the geology of the states and describes in some detail the economic geol ogy agy of the more important camps as axy 1 n as some of the less widely known mini 8 regions this part of the report includes include s a small map 0 of f the western united states stat 8 showing the general distribution of the th mining districts the report contains a separate inal each state showing the location of the mn MIR ing districts and by appropriate symbols symbol the principal metals produced in each there are fourteen of these state maps mans which show the location and area of over 1400 mining districts the map including the lie L largest number of districts is that of the northern counties of california which contain districts the smallest is the map of trans pecos texas which shows only eleven districts with every mining district symbol on each of these maps is a number which refers to its name in an accompanying list A bibliography of the publications of thi tha U S geological survey on each district is included in the text as well as a condensed statement of the geology and nature of the ore deposits a list of the metals produced and the shipping point of the camp bulletin minin mining districts of the western united states may be obtained free on application to the director of the U S geological survey washington DD D CC |
