Show salt lake meeting of the american ameri e can institute ansti tute by WILL C HIGGINS the meeting of the american institute of mining engineers held in salt lake from august 10 to 14 inclusive was one of the most successful most interesting and the largest attended ever participated in by that organization and salt lake as a city end nd the many leadin citizens who assisted in making this an occasion that will long be remembered can well feel proud of the fact that both city and citizens have dived up to the reputation so long sustained fo hospitality and good fellowship the hotel utah was the gathering place for members of the institute and their friends friend sand and many were the words of praise best bestowed owea upon this now famous hostelry by our guests who claimed that no finer or better hotel could be found in the united states although there were a number that were larger all of the institute meetings were held at the hotel utah numerous were the entertainments given within its walls while banquets big and I 1 little attl e were indulged in at the roof garden in the regular dining room and in the alg ig grill the closing banquet in the grill 1911 on the evening of the to institute members friends and invited guests being one of the swell est affairs of its kind ever iven given in salt lake the institute meetings w were e ra held ac cording to schedule and many interest ing papers were submitted treating of technical subjects in the mining metallurgical lurg ical and ore dressing field and the discussions were both interesting and instructive tive on tuesday a visit of inspection was made to the utah copper mine at bingham the magna concentrating mill and the smelting smelling sm elting plant of the american smelting smelling Sm elting and refining of the united states company at midvale the sm smelter elter of the american company at murray and the smelter of the international smelting smelling Sm elting company atTo at thoele tooele oele thursday an excursion wa was badde to park city w where here an inspection was made odthe of the great underground power station and hoist of the silver king coalition company and the new leaching plant of tha mines operating company on friday the closing day a special train was run to provo canyon where an inspection was made of the power plant of the utah power light company at olmstead all of these excursions were highly interesting te resting and the visitors were lavishly entertained by the different committees of the institute and by committees appointed appoint ea at points of destination besides the visit t ta mines smelters shelters sm elters mills and power plants other forms of entertainments tain ments were provided for saltair opened its gates to the visitors automobiles were provided for sightseeing sight seeing purposes the ladies accompanying members of the institute were entertained at the country club at the theaters and at various pleas ure resorts and the final banquet was greatly enjoyed by all the bingham excursion the special train of four coaches left the salt lake route de pot at 8 30 A im tuesday and arrived at bingham over the scenic bingham garfield railroad about 10 carrying in the neighborhood of members of the institute sti tute friends and guests the train was routed to the works of the uta utah h copper and on the bridge crossing main bingham canyon the excursionists dis embarked excellent panoramic from the bridge an view was obtain obtained ea of the surface workings of the utah company in a most interesting talk general manager robert C gemmell outlined to the visitors the extent and scope of operations giving methods of mining geological conditions ore values ton nage tons exposed ready for extraction and shipment to the magna and arthur mills the length of life of the proposition closing with the statement that the companas comp anys property had already produced over and had paid practically in dividends returning to the train strain a few minutes ride took the excursionists to the pit where mr gemmel through his megaphone supplemented ills his previous remark as regarding mining practice from the pit the party walked to the bingham garfield depot from which point of view as it was the noon hour the heavy surface blasting could easily be observed before again entering the cars a large panoramic negative of the group was waa taken by L hollard manager of the hollard photo company of salt lake As the train started back to garfield each guest was served with a most appetizing lunch which was thoroughly enjoyed at magna a stop was made while an examination was made of the great magna concentrating plant here the excursion ests were met by employees of the company who courteously con conducted ducted groups of visitors through the works the last stop was made at the great garfield plant of the american smelting smelling Sm elting refining company where every courtesy was extended and assistance rendered in order that every member cx 0 the party might familiarize him self with the practice employed whereby crude ore and concentrates were reduced to copper matte and end finally to alisher copper before arriving at the plant representatives of the company distributed a beautifully illustrated and interesting booklet descriptive of the and its operation A number of ladies and children were among the visitors and these joining with the members and guests of the institute greatly enjoyed the occasion while all were much pleased with what they had witnessed during the day attached to the train was the rescue car of the bureau of mines and demonstrations st of the apparatus used in first aid and in rescue work were made in the car during the trip to bingham at magna before the train pulled out for garfield A practical illustration of first aid methods was given the train arrived at salt lake at p m the visit to park city the members of the institute visited park city on the the start was made from the D R G depot at 8 A M sharp about 1 50 being on the special train which 1 reached park city after two hours of of delightful ride the rio grande line to park city is indeed picturesque and every mile its charm from start to of the distance nas finish at park city all kinds of conveyances were in waiting and under the direction of frank J wescott secretary of the silver king coalition james humes superintendent for the company george W lamborne manager of the daly judge company 0 N friendly superintendent of the daly judge F W sherman superintendent of the daly west mill george dern bern manager of the mines operating company and theodore P holt mill superintendent of the mines operating company a start was soon made for the silver king coalition plant and mill upon arrival there an inspection spec tion was made of the mill and hoist after which the visitors were lowered to the foot level of the main shaft where mine cars attached to electric locomotives were in waiting each car held from three 4 N f in the big pit of the utah copper company at bingham photo by will C higgins to four persons and the start was made for the great underground silver hill station with great hilarity from the main shaft to the station the distance is about aboul two cwb miles and as this portion of the mine i is but dimly 1 lighted the sensation was that of being in another world altogether the silver hill station of the silver king coalition fully described in the may issue of the mining review is undoubtedly one of the wonders of the age when it comes to mining practice and when this great power plant and hoisting works 2000 and more feet underground was beheld by the com banys guests great admiration was expressed by all over this masterpiece of workmanship the station was speedily converted into a banquet hall however and a splendid luncheon was served to all present after refreshing the inner man and woman for a number of ladies had the courage to make the trip the trains of 0 f mine cars were again boarded and a start made I 1 for the mouth of the alliance tunnel which 1 is a mile and a half in length at the th portal conveyances were in waiting and tha th excursionists were taken to the mill ot 1 the mines operating company passing en route the mine and mill of the daly daiy judge 1 mining company much interest was taken in ins inspecting inspection pectin i aj mill of the i the operating company an and d especially so as the process utilized for the treatment of low grade ores is of recent origin and is successfully applied the I 1 of its success being illustrated in the bars of bullion exhibited just outside the melt ing room in this exhibit there were seventeen full sized bars of silver weighing from sixty to sixty five pounds each and going from to fine and these represent ed the cleanup clean up of two weeks run of the mill at the party were again entrained on the rio grande and a the hotel lobby alex bowie a prominent coal mine operator of colorado and manager of the juanita coal coke company at bowie same state was one of the active members of the institute who participated great mining achievements the kelly filter press company of salt lake had models of its press on exhibition adjoining institute headquarters and hundreds of visitors took advantage of the opportunity
