Show THE NEW STRIKE IN ALASKA some interesting and authentic information as to the new gold camp on ion the Shu shanna river alaska were given recently in a statement by john rosene well known alaskan in the seattle post intelli bencer he says the new gold discovery that is now attracting the attention of all alaskans Ala and many others is located near the headwaters of the tanana river at approximately latitude 62 degrees north longitude degrees west this region has heretofore been visited by only a few individuals and is therefore unknown to most alaskans Ala as well as the public at large I 1 visited this section two years ago and my knowledge of the subject is therefore first hand there are four different routes from seattle and pacific coast points to the new diggins namely 1 via cordova chitina chilina and pass trail 2 via valdez copper Cef center iter chi sto china and Balu lnita pass and nabesna trail to Shu shanna or as it is sometimes called chibana Ch isana 3 via skagway and whitehorse white river thence up the white river to the confluence of the white river and its main tributary the doniek river thence by poling boats to the mouth of the snag river thence by trial to Shu shanna 4 via skagway to whitehorse thence from whitehorse to kluane from kluane by trail to Shu shanna the actual conditions that will be encountered on these routes are as follows 1 cordova route via steamer 1400 miles via railroad cordova to mccarty miles via trail mccarty to Shu shanna approximately miles total dist distance tance 1700 miles 2 valdez route via steamer to valdez 1450 miles via government wagon road to copper center miles via trail copper center to Shu shanna approximately miles total distance 1800 miles 3 via steamer to skagway Sk agway miles via railroad skagway to whitehorse miles via steamer whitehorse to white river miles via steamer white horse to donjek doniek miles via poling boats don jek to snag river 60 miles via trail snag river to Shu shanna approximately miles i total desance about 1750 miles parties who elect electta tto to go by this route bringing their own horses had better leave the yukon river steamers at coffee creek and take the trail from there to Shu shanna 4 via steamer to skagway Sk agway wiles miles 11 via railroad skagway to white horse wb waite miles via government wagon road horse to kluane miles via trail klvana to Shu shanna approximated miles total tota N no 4 is froal iro distance 1350 miles route 0 to miles shorter than the other 0 or routes parties in the interior of alaska I 1 f s the yukon territory will of course go either by the white river or the tanana river route no 1 by steamer or railroad via cordova to mccarty presents safe and comfortable for table travel for 1600 miles from mccarty to chibana via pass trail the conditions are the most difficult offered along any of the routes parties selecting this route should have horses and sufficient horse feed to take them into the country they should also understand how to manage animals in swift glacial streams as well as over and an d around glaciers route no 2 by steamer to valdez and automobile stage to copper center presents safe and comfortable travel for 1550 miles from copper center via nabesna trail requires good horses there is sufficient grass for horse feed along the trail no r this route unless in r one should go via possession of a guide or an unusually good bump of location care should be taken L in crossing the chistochina and nabesna rivers route no 3 via steamer and railroad to skagway and whitehorse and river steamer to white river presents safe and comfortable travel for about 1500 miles and no serious inconvenience for miles up the white river to doniek from danjek donjek to snag river means negotiating 60 miles against the swift currents of a difficult river and should not be undertaken by anyone not expert in river poling boats from the snag river to the new diggings is an easy miles if you have horses route no 4 via steamer and railroad lail road to skagway and whitehorse and horse stage to kluane presents safe and comfortable travel for 1200 miles the remaining miles is the best trail of any of the four routes however no one should go over this trail without horses and guide so as to avoid accidents in crossing the doniek generke Gien erke and white rivers there is an abundance of horse feed along this trail dont go without provisions and supplies you can buy nothing in that country unless it be copper and gold which you can not eat or wear dont get in any swift glacial streams unless you know exactly what you are up against it is often more dangerous than it looks if you are anxious to cross in a hurry it is seldom dangerous if you go 90 about it with care and caution dont get excited at best it will take one year or more to determine the value and an d merits of this new gold discovery it is highly inadvisable to tush rush in there with only a few supplies with the idea of staking something and then coming out for more supplies t dont forget to post yourself on the new mining laws and regulations passed by congress ress in 1912 and by the alaska legislature in n 1913 dont bring any horse feed into the new camp amp there is an abundance of grass and wil wild d peas in the valleys nearby all you have to do is to turn your horses out winter or summer and they will take care of themselves the climate for miles north and south of the new camp is the very best in the interior of alaska there are millions of acres of grazing and farming land north south and east of the new camp there is plenty of timber for cabins fuel and for mining purposes the new discovery is in the center of a large and apparently rich copper district I 1 have seen some of the copper deposits myself if the new gold discovery proves extensive it is almost certain to result in the greatest industrial development that has yet taken place in alaska and will furnish permanent and profitable occupation for thousands of men f for or many years to come |
