Show NATURAL RESOURCES the metal mining districts of the eastern portion of utah will be visited during the present season by B S butler of the U S geological survey who later will prepare a general report on the ore deposits of utah G F laughlin will cooperate with mr butler in the investigation of some of the districts especially in the wasatch range reconnaissance examination of the vanadium and uranium deposits in eastern utah will be made by F L I ress iress who will give considerable attention to the mining of for the production of radium in which there is widespread public interest terest hi the great ore supplies from which the radium of the world is made being located in this region the geologic mapping of the areas known as the sunnyside Sunny side and wellington quadrangles rang les in carbon county which contain the most important reserves of high grade coal in the state will be completed by F R dark clark who will classify the lands similar examinations and mapping in the vernal region will be carried on by E G woodruff assisted by M W ball especial attention being given by mr woodruff to certain deposits of bituminous which are capable of yielding oil and gas in considerable sid erable quantities on d distillation 1 st illation spec special 1 al examinations and tests of these in the field will be made at a number of points in order to determine whether they are sufficiently ficken aly rich in hydrocarbons to qualify them as a reserve storehouse for the future production of oil and gas by distillation on a commercial scale the topographic graphic branch of the survey is at work in mapping two 30 minute and two 15 minute quadrangles with the respective approximate areas each of square miles and square squar e miles the first two are the logan t quadrangle 1 in cache and box 13 ox elder counties an and d in the cache national forest and the vernal quadrangle in uinta county the two 15 minute quadrangles are the sunnyside Sunny side and wellington in R carbon county the logan quadrangle is being surveyed by topographers ers II I 11 I H I hodge son and howard clark the vernal by oscar jones C and E C burt the sun by E P davis and the wellington by E R bartlett this work will include the detailed surveys necessary ne to prepare a map which will show all rivers towns roads and railroads as well as the surface relief of the country by means of 50 and foot contour lines the comp completed eted maps will be engraved on the scales of I 1 and 2 miles to the inch and will probably not be ready for distribution until two years after the C completion of the field work the water resources of the state of jf utah with particular reference to the flow of surface waters are being investigated by the united states geological survey in cooperation with the state and others for this purpose 76 stations are maintained in utah 18 of which are on streams of the colorado river basin and 58 on streams of the great basin 24 stations are located on canals or ditches all the stations are maintained in cooperation with the state in addition the forest service cooperates on three stations the united states weather bureau on one municipalities on six and private persons on 32 at these stations the height or stage of the rivers is determined each day by local observers and at some stations by automatic gages and measurements of the discharge of the streams are made by engineers of the survey when feasible from these data the quantity of water flowing past the stations is determined stream flow data are of particular value in utah in the design construction and operation of power plants and irrigation projects and in carey mt act examinations and in for the proper classification of the public lands in addition much use Is found for the records in all problems where the quantity of water is involved such as those relating to river regulation stream pollution water storage seepage flood control and municipal water supplies examinations and reports needed by the 1 land and classification board of the united states geological survey in passing on oil right the use of 0 of way applications involving water in utah are made under the direction of N C grover chief hydraulic engineer engine ei ITe federa deral by E C larue hydraulic engineer building salt lake city utah and K E C call a murphy hydraulic engineer napa fornia |
