Show REGION OF MINERALS the llano burnet folio no 1 83 of the 0 geologic atlas of the united states by h sidney paige has been issued by the unita TUini ted states geological survey it describes an ail area lying 0 in llano burnet mason aason san saba travis and williamson counties texas the more important towns being bell llano burnet marble falls a and il d bertram bertral llano county is distinctly a stock raisin 9 region but much farming is carried on there ther e burnet county is devoted more to faamu farming but also raises much stock the region is of particular parti cu ar geologic inthis lute est in that erosion has 1 exposed to vi view CW t the h precambrian pre cambrian schist and granite compeer underlying the paleozoic and later rocks besides giving an account of the 0 geologic ecologic eo logic and history of the region the folio is of interest to in mining ining and business men in describing the mineral resources these are in the order of their present importance building stone rare earth mui brals bierals iron ore gold graphite serpentine I 1 talc lead ore pyrite copper ore manganese ore oil and water of these on only y the first two are of colm commercial mercial importance at present the copper and man manganese langanes ganes ores and the oil are probably valueless and the value of the remainder is unproved detailed descriptions of the these S e deposits have hav already been given in bulletin odthe of the geological survey by the same author but bit this folio with its more detailed maps should be of added interest at present most of the stone quarried is especially suitable for monuments and is so used with the increasing growth of large cities in the south and with additional addition ai transportation facilities the granite indu try in this re region ion should become more extensive than it is at present few if any ether deposits of rare earth minerals in the world and certainly no others in american outside of the localities i where monazite is found are so exten extensive siv e as that of baringer hill which is 12 miles north of kingsland the nearest railroad point 16 miles mies west of burnet and 22 miles northeast of llano it is a low mound rising about 40 feet above the river and is 19 formed by an irregular pipe or short dika dik of resistant to er pegmatite that is more sion that the surrounding rock the economic interest in the rare eart minerals centers in their inca incandescence 0 oa being heated and owing to this p property opert they have been much sought thoria bery lia ila atria and zirconia show it in the greatest which abic degree but thoria and form the bulk of the incandescent oxide used in gas mantles are too easily va to be used in an electric glower su as that of the bernst lamp an all zirconia however will stand the necessary 0 oi high temperature before the discovery this deposit it was practically impossible get sufficient bearin hearing 11 minerals to man ju facture the lal lamps nips the bleeds leeds of ithe bernst lamp company which owns the t deposit require ire only the occasional work ing ng of the mine and after enough is obtained to supply its wants for a few months ahead the mine is closed but a few hundred pounds a year is extracted the folio comprises sixteen pages of I 1 text and three maps one showing topography graphy a second showing the areal distribution of the different formations and a V third dell delineating the structure and economic geology it may he be purchased for jive cents on application of the director of the geological survey washington D C in the field edition of octavo size with the maps printed on tough paper folded in the cover the folio is sold at 50 cents a copy |
