Show interesting ALASKA NEWS SPECIAL correspondence seattle washington july 20 prince william sound alaska has stepped into the limelight as the heaviest mineral tonnage producer in alaska not only are there two regular shippers at points in the sound hut but two additional copper properties will be opened this year and to their total for the year ending december will be added the regular tonnage from the bonanza mine which is shipped irom from cordova the seaport of the sound it is predicted that within a short time prince william sound will ship regularly tons per annum at present the three large shippers are the bonanza mine Kerin ecott and alaska whose ore is brought down on the copper river railway and shipped from cordova the beatson bonanza located on latouche island and the ellamar mining company located at Ell ellamar ainar your correspondent recently visited and inspected each of these three great properties and with the ore blackd out as well as the estimated amount for future working they will undoubtedly remain regular shippers for many years to come As has been heretofore detailed the bonanza ore is of the highest grade known all of the first shipments steadily running over oer o er 60 and as high 1 as 74 ellamar and beatson properties are both low grade which is generally the case with other copper mines on prince william sound two other properties are expected to become regular shippers during the present summer these being the dickey property in bay and the fidalgo bay copper company two other properties are being developed on latouche island one by J A murphy known as the latouche limited minin mining n company operating on the eastern side of the island and the other by francis A hancock who is located three miles north of the beatson property in charge of the reynolds mine both of these properties are being developed but are not shipping as at at the bonanza mine an immense amount of machinery is being installed and early in the fall this property will have trebled its output so great is the tonnage coming out of prince william sound at the present time that two steel freight steamships have been placed in service for the purpose of exclusively handling this class of ore P F hodges of the well known pioneer firm or of W A hodges and sons assayers or of salt lake city has with W T and F H oster opened the cordova assay office and owing to the large number of prospectors working in the back country the new lish ment is already ine meeting eting with great success representatives of the united states mining smelting smelling Sm elting refining company the london exploration company and the pierson syndicate have sent men into the interior from cordova with the result that some new and remarkably rich gold quartz and copper strikes have been discovered while individual prospectors have been able to bond their properties without any trouble on the mother lode property which joins the bonanza on the other side of the mountain a corps of eastern experts are at work and it is said their report will be highly favorable and that this property will be thoroughly worked commencing this fall samples of copper have run as high ay as 70 and there seems to be an immense quantity of ore running more than 50 the copper river northwestern railway has completed a survey from mile post to the mother lode property and four miles out on this new survey still another spur has been run to cross the range and enter the white river country where the quartz showings are somewhat sensational in the event of these two sections the white river country and the mother lode district warranting same the railroad will be built the railroad has decided to change all of its engines to oil burners and a contract has been arranged for to secure the product from the california oil fields at the same time all of the mining properties operating in the district have arranged to burn oil as there seems to be no hope of the coal of alaska being opened the alaska northern railway a canadian corporation which operates from seward to the interior has just imported a gasoline motor car for its passenger service and the imported coal is only used when necessary to transport heavy freight henry bratnober who represents the london exploration company officially announces that if development on the mckinley lake property justifies it a stamp mill will be erected industrial agent kenneth kerr of the alaska steamship company recently returned from alaska bringing bringino with him pounds in samples of co copper from the famous bonanza mine one of these samples alone weighs 1500 pounds and is a splendid specimen of metallic copper these samples will be sent to the new york land and irrigation exposition to be held in ill madison square garden in november and will form part of a g general exhibit which alaska will make at this exposition an agents gents are now going through the territory gathering up agricultural mineral and general exhibits |
