Show SALMON RIVER GOLD PLACERS machinery equipment Tran transported to the diggings in boats herald salmon idaho the main fleet of boats of the salmon river mining co will depart from salmon today loaded with machinery and supplies for their diggings miles down the river they are in charge of captain guleke and are accompanied by J R painter general manager of the company the placer ground of this company is situated about fifteen miles down the river from salmon being a mile and a quarter from jos eakins ranch which the company purchased last year in order to use it as a base of operations the bar on which the salmon river companas comp anys claims are located is on the north side of the salmon river about fifteen miles from the camp of dixie tt it slopes rapidly toward the river and rises fifteen to feet above high water mr painter prospected the ground very thoroughly all last year and hs his determinations are sufficient to convince himself and his associates that the gravel is rich enough to pay handsomely if worked by proper methods the gold is fine mostly flour gold but the pay is there and all that is necessary is to equip the ground with suitable machinery the machinery selected for this work consists of power shovels electrically driven the gravel is to be shoveled dry and dumped into sluiceways sluice ways where water is supplied for washing in the usual way the water being furnished from the salmon river by means of pumps electrically driven mr painter speaking to the herald regarding this enterprise said that he had found that the flour gold in such situations is not easily handled by the dredging method that much of the values when the shovels are working in water keep keel continually settling to the bottom and are necessarily lost by working the gravel dry he proposes to avert this loss and only apply the stream of water after the gravel is in the sluiceway the method of washing will be by means of a Dev gold machine especially adapted to the saving of fine gold it is really a long rocker twenty feet long worked by power it contains ten sets of riffles fiffles rif fles and after the gravel has passed through the rocker it is screened by griz alies and caught by a set of round tables ten in the nest which are operated by a jigging motion with this combination of machines and by the use of burlap and mercury mr painter says he can save 96 per cent of the flour gold some particles of which are too fine to be seen by the naked eye dut but experiments of the last season have indicated that the company may yet find it profitable to work the concentrated cent rated tailings by the use of cyanide the flume and all preliminary works were built last year the power is to be taken from five mile creek through a flume feet long A distance of thirty six feet of this flume is brought on a trestle thirty one feet high which indicates the engineering gi difficulty to be overcome in that country lt it carries seventeen cubic feet of water per second and has a fall of one and one half inches in feet and the water is discharged into a pair of 3 foot pelton waterwheels water wheels double wheel each wheeling being supplied by two nozzles it gives horsepower which is to be used electrically being transmitted by wire less i than two miles the generators and motors are of the edison type all machines will be simple and convenient of operation and when once installed the plant will require but four men on a shift the machines comprise two shovels one crane or der rick centrifugal pumps rockers round tables and lighting plant mr painter says he expected to have the whole ready for operation in about two months and he believes the equipment will be ala able to run ten months in the year the salmon river mining company is a philadelphia concern its directors stockholders and head offices being there among its directors are such leading business men as john hastings the well known goldleaf gold leaf man who is president W warrell wagner vice president isaac croff secretary and treasurer besides these alexis I 1 dupont of dupont bros powder men and a number of other leading men of philadelphia wealthy men and men of high standing are connected with the enterprise supt bupt J R painter is himself one of the largest stockholders 0 |
