| Show RAILROAD TO ST THOMAS it now begins to look as if an isolated but very richly endowed portion of the west would soon be favored with railroad fa cili ties this is the country in southeastern nevada of which st thomas is the commercial center located but a few hundred feet above sea level the st thomas region has an almost semitropical semi tropical climate and is but little behind southern california points in the raising of early vegetables and fruit but for years it has been handicapped because of difficulties of transportation and excessive costs in getting its products to a favorable market this section also abounds in a large variety of mineral products such qs as gold and copper ores salt gypsum and stone many of which have been practically valueless because of the difficulty and expense of getting them to the railroad because of these irksome and unfavorable conditions the growth of st thomas and vicinity has been slow although blessed as to climate and natural advantages the attractions of the muddy lauddy valley have not appealed in vain to those who realize the splendid possibilities of that region and more than once there ha has been talk of railroad building into this prolific section but so far this has all been paper talk and nothing came of it now however it begins to look as if the road will be built As a matter of fact it is positively stated that orders have been given for its construction from moapa on the line of the salt lake route to st thomas already grading is in progress and the line will be completed to logan in the near future from logan to st thomas the distance is but twelve miles and from logan to st thomas on the virgin river the grades are easy and construction st will be rapid midway dway between logan is overton and this thrifty little place also will be on the line the completion of the road will give life and vigor to a large scope of country no doubt exists as to the agricultural possibilities bili ties and the ex extreme fertility of the soil from above logan clear down to st thomas but the greatest response to the quickening influences of the new road will be the activity in mining operations which will extend over to the great grand gulch copper mine in mohave Ifo have county arizona to the gold and copper districts in the gold butte section and as far down as the confluence of the virgin river with the colorado a stretch of country so rich in its diversity of mineral resources as to excite the admiration of all who are aware of their existence but it is stated that the road will not long maintain its terminal at st thomas but that at an early day the line will be extended up the virgin river to st george in southwestern utah another section teeming with agricultural and mineral wealth taking it all in all it would be difficult to find a scope of country in the west where a single branch line of railroad would strike such a responsive chord as that which will be traversed by the line from moaga moapa to st thomas and on to st george |
