Show TRADE AND FINANCE LETTER in its regular trade and finance letter issued by the national copper bank of salt lake we clip the following the spirit of conservatism in general still prevails and we believe wisely so with an optimistic undertone which in respect act to the local situation is without doubt jus tidied by the facts the united states has a good trade balance in its favor for the first quarter of 1911 having sold abroad many million dollars worth of cotton steel iron stocks bonds and short term notes there has not been a return of the speculative tendency but buy buying 1 ing continues among the preferred stocks of large industrial corporations these concerns representing some ten billions of dollars of invested capital are awaiting the decisions of the supreme court on the cases still pending they are not undertaking ive operations under these circumstances the volume of business actually being transacted as shown by the bank clearings of the country is fairly satisfactory the lead taken by the international harvester company of america is freely submitting to the missouri courts its books and records and in inviting full publicity of its operations and methods will probably be followed by other giant corporations if such a change of policy be adopted we predict a closer and more friendly relation between the people and the large interests of the country local conditions this is the month for the payment of dividends by industrial and commercial corporations and by banks and trust companies already the effect has been to stimulate act activity
