structures ever built in the west and will hardly have a peer in the west its location also is admirable as it will be on the busy corner in the very heart of the financial center of salt lake it will occupy the site now occupied by the smith drug store and other business firms on the northeast corner of the crossing of main ifrain street and second south and will be as imposing and handsome as is the hotel utah on tain main and south temple streets towering up into tha clouds it will be a landmark that can be seen for many miles up and down salt lake valley and will call attention of all to the significant fact that salt lake is forging to the front in leaps and bounds in everything that implies permanent growth and uninterrupted terru p ted prosperity work on the new walker brothers bank building of which the architects perspective is shown on this page will begin actively november 1 on that date the tearing down of the buildings which now occupy the site on the northeast corner of main and second south streets will begin eames young the architects and james stewart co the contractors both say they can and will complete the building ready for occupancy within one year from that date the new building has been described by H W daum baum of james stewart co who have erected modern structures from the atlantic to the pacific as the last word in modern office buildings the structure is designed primarily to furnish modern and completely equipped quarters for walker brothers bankers and to meet the increasing demands in salt lake city for the highest class office space in a fireproof building the building will ibe be sixteen stories high exclusive of the tower which will reach four stories higher the observation platform which will surmount the tower will be feet above the sidewalk level while the globe on the top of the flag pole will be feet above the ground the new building therefore will be one of the highest structures west of chicago the topmost point of the trumpet on the statue of moroni moron surmounting the highest pinnacle of the mormon temple is feet above the ground the observation platform on the tower of the new walker bank building will be 2 feet above this point while the flagpole flag pole will reach 42 feet higher the building will be higher than any structure in kansas city omaha los an igeez or portland it will be taller than 01 t f althous although it will be surpassed in height by the new 42 story L C smith building there which is now in course of construction the merchants exchange building in san francisco is feet high two san francisco buildings are taller the humboldt bank building which is teet high and the call building the tower of which reaches feet above the sidewalk I 1 level evel the walker brothers bank dilding building will be constructed of steel frame with concrete floors the exterior of the first two stories will vill be of granite the next story of terra cotta the next eleven stories of brick the two tol stories of terra cotta and the tower of brick and terra cotta the entire building will be as nearly fireproof as modern methods of con st ruction can make it the sixteen story portion of the will be feet feer this takes up the entire main street frontage and the greater part of the second south street frontage on the balance of the second south street fronta frontage e the height will be three stories for the present but the foundation and wall will be of such a character that in later years if it is found necessary this part of the building may be continued upward the entrance will be on I 1 main street and the architects eames youn young of st louis are devoting espee especial ial attention to making this entrance one of the handsomest in the country 11 marble arble staircases rise from each side and the treatment is of a nature to carry out the beauty and dignity which form the key note of the entire building walker brothers bankers will occupy the north part of the ground floor and will have practically three floors devoted to bank purposes the details of arrangement have not yet been finally worked out but it is the determination to have one of the finest most modern a and nd completely equipped banking 0 quarters in the country the ground floor will be devoted to the public portion of the bank and will have writing rooms consultation rooms and ev every er y other feature which has been devised for the accommodation of the public by a bank the safety deposit vaults will be in the basement baleme rit on the mezzanine floor ficor wll will be place for the bookkeepers and the directors room the finish of the banking room will be in marble and the entire building will have tile floors and marble wainscoting the building will contain office rooms and every one of them will have outside light they will have the most modern equipment including lee ice water taps on each floor A prominent feature will be the elevator service there will be four traction high speed elevators something entirely new in office buildings in salt lake and affording maximum speed and safety in this service many years it has been known as the smith drug corner the smith drug co will continue to have this location when the new building is completed ord 41 7 present home of walker brothers bankers details of the construction are being worked out as rapidly as possible itis the firm intention of the directors of the M H walker realty co to have the building when completed a credit not only to the bank but to salt lake city and the entire intermountain region the site and its history the site on which the new sixteen story walker bank building will be erected has been a busy corner almost ever since salt lake city was founded for a number of years in the earliest pioneer days it was occupied by a blacksmith shop and a blacksmith shop during that period was a busy place at that time city creek ran through the heart of the little settlement passing just east of this site near where commercial street now is about the beginning of the the corner was built up with one story stores for many years the elephant store with its big elephant sign in front occupied the corner building giving the name elephant corner by which it was known until well into the the picture showing the elephant corner was taken in 1868 the elephant store on the carner was run by cunnington co the pioneer jewelry store next north was owned by john meeks father of walter J meeks the drug store next north was run by george and john bowman and the new york store adjoining on the north was a branch of walker brothers the crowd shown in the foreground was attracted by the spectacle of a one legged man walking a tight tope rope after cunnington co moved to
