Show THE S L OGDEN RAILWAY by byj J B ambler eng dept general electric co the interurban system of the salt lake ogden railway between salt lake and ogden was designed by mr H A strauss of the Faul knau construction company of chicago and represents the most up to date practice in interurban railroad construction it is similar to other volt direct current interurban roads throughout the country but in this particular case the conditions f for or installing the system were very favorable due to the fact that the road had previously been operated as a steam road and the grades and curves are much less than those usually found in interurban roads which are continuations of the city trolley service the power for operating the system is obtained from the telluride power gos cos transmission system at 3 phase 60 cycle volts and is stepped down at four sub stations located at the proper points along the line to 2300 volts and then converted into direct current for the trolley by means of induction motor generator sets the substation sub station equipment was designed by the general electric co especially to meet the conditions of railway service and the direct current generators therefore have quite liberal momentary overload over load capacity the direct current generators are also slightly different from those usually installed for this class of service in that they are designed for operation at a maximum of whereas the usual direct current trolley voltage is about maximum there are three transformers in each in each substation sub station each rated K W volts primary and 2300 1150 volts secondary the lower secondary voltage being used for starting the induction motors of the motor generator sets the motor generator sets condit each of a ac K W volt direct current generator direct con necked to a 3 phase 60 cycle 2300 volt induction motor running at R P al the generators are of the commutating pole construction which insures commutation under the exacting conditions of railway service in addition to the transformers and motor generator set in each substation sub station there is the standard equipment of disconnecting switches choke coils lightning arresters and switchboard the lightning arresters are the recently developed aluminum cell type consisting essentially of stacks of cones separated by an electrolyte and immersed in tanks filled with oil for the pur pose of insulating and cooling in the substation sub station at farmington there is also installed in addition to the transformers and motor generator set a steam equipment with reciprocating engines belted to alternating current 2300 volt generators and a K W mixed pressure curtis steam turbine which is designed to operate on the exhaust steam from the reciprocating engines but which is also provided with valves connected to the governing mechanism whereby high pressure steam can be supplied to the turbine in case the amount of low pressure steam delivered from the reciprocating engines is insufficient for the load requirements this steam plant is designed to supplement the power obtained f from rom the long distance transmission system the electrical equipment for the cars has been designed to meet both local and limited class of service over the thirty seven miles of road between salt lake and ogden provision has also been made so that each motor car can perform this same service when hauling a trailer car the motor equipment for each car consists of 4 G E B motors of the commutating pole type rated H P each in order to provide for operating the cars singly or several coupled together in a train and operated simultaneously the general electric multiple unit type M control is used with this system when several cars are coupled together in a train the circuit connections will be so arranged that the motors on all of the motor cars may he be c controlled ont rolled from either end of any motor car the cars may be coupled in any desired relation and with either end of any car connected to any other car in the train this system of control comprises two parts the first consisting of a series parallel motor controller composed of a number of electrically operated switches called contractors cont actors and electrically operated reverse switch for the motors ai won type of coach used on SL 8 L ogden railroad called reverses the contractors cont actors make the different electrical combinations of the motors and regulate the starting resistance in circuit with them the second comprises master controllers which operate the motor controlling contractors cont actors and rever sers relays for producing the automatic acceleration and a multiple cable extending the length of the train provided with couplers between cars the control is automatic in its action and provides for the acceleration of the train at a determined predetermined pre current per motor without preventing the manual operation of the master controller at less than the predetermined current if desired the operation of the contractors cont actors is controlled from the master control but governed by a notching or current limit relay in the motor circuit so that the accelerating current of the motors is substantially constant i this is accod accomplished by having small auxiliary interlocking inter locking switches on certain contractors cont actors the movement of each connecting the operating coil of the succeeding into the control circuit the master controller is in general somewhat similar in construction to the ordinary controllers used on street carst cars except that it has a much lighter duty to perform as it of course does not make or break the main line current which is taken care of by the contractors cont actors when the master cont controller rolleT handle is moved from point to point the rate ralle of progression is governed by the current limit relay so that the advance is not made faster than will keep the current in the motors within the prescribed limit the cars on which these equipments are installed were made by the jewett car company of newark ohio and are strict up to date in in every respect being finished in mahogany and very well lighted by a large number of incandescent lamps and heated with a hot water heating system the car are arranged for a seating capacity of sixty they are fifty six sik feet long and have a total weight exclusive of passengers of pounds each J B AMBLER |
