Show jeffrey exhibit at penns pennsylvania y avania mining exposition 0 0 WRITTEN FOR THE MINING REVIEW thousands of daily visitors including a large number of coal operators and mine superintendents have been afforded a novel treat in their visit to the jeffrey exhibit of the right hand rib from which point it cuts across the face until the left hand rib is reached A steel feed cable wound on a power driven drum at the front end of the t i c T i w if tas K bs r oi x c kakl wf manit 11 sea ss A 11 Y y i jg V iby Jf cm i sa BU i t T al 1 l m t T ami 1 IE I E 1 M 6 nt pi tv aar apr ff 7 11 m c 4 it AT rn w ap qt OR v y 1 1 A Z fal r 1 i iga p V lr ast v nair w jim w no 1 corner of mine room jeffrey exhibit modern mining machinery considered by everyone who has seen it the feature exhibit at the western pennsylvania mining exposition this exhibit occupying a space of over square feet reaching over feet in length by 30 feet wide was located in the northwestern corner of the machinery hall it was designed and built entirely by the jaffrey manufacturing company columbus ohio being in the form of a model mine room showing the companas comp anys latest and most improved types of mining machines and electric drills as well as electric mine locomotives in actual operation and for all practical purposes as they would be operated in underground workings every operation is explained by the demonstrators this mine room had a coal face forty five feet long and six feet high constructed of large lumps of bituminous coal practical demonstrations were daily conducted by the operators actually undercutting and drilling the coal and hauling same out of the room illustration no I 1 shows a 28 A short wall machine undercutting the coal across the face at the lett left of this machine is a self propelling steel truck equipped with an automatic cable reel which winds up 1 the electric cable as the truck moves out ot of the room this machine unloads itself from the truck makes the dumping cut at machine pulls it across the face of the jhb coal at a speed regulated by the hardness the machine to its work and at a proper angle for its greatest cutting efficiency when the machine is finished in the room it can be loaded on to the truck with its own power its narrow cutter head and short length of machine from the coal face when cutting makes it especially valuable for cutting ribs and pillars of coal which have a to come down when undercut illustration no 2 shows a jeffrey A 5 electric augur drill in operation drilling a hole in the coal face this drill is operated by an electric motor and will drill any mate rial in which an augur drill will stand up this illustration also shows another corner of the mine room with a 21 A mining machine equipped with a flame and gaff gas proof roof motor and starting box in other respects it is similar to the well known jeffrey 17 A electric coal cutting machine being especially adapted for the hardest cutting encountered in any coal mine another distinctive feature about this exhibit is the fact that it was the first public exhibition of the ahe new jeffrey armor plate electric mine locomotive designed and constructed for surface or underground mine haulage illustration no 3 shows a view of a locomotive in the foreground the complete A V 7 r C 1 too N 0 2 another corner of mine room jeffrey exhibit of the cutting and upon the nature of the coal or rock in which the cutting is done another cable which has no connection with the power serves as a guide holding frames on all sides are made of 0 solid steel armor plate which is made to special jeffrey specifications practically making this type of locomotive indestructible as well as adapting it for the most severe service encountered in mine haulage two other jeffrey locomotives are also shown in this illustration being built entirely of structural steel frames and equipped with motor capacity sufficient to the use of this crab device A pressed steel car is hauled from one end of the room to the other end demonstrating how loaded mine cars are pulled from the face of the mine room while the locomotive remains in the entry ri pie J ak Q no 3 jeffrey exhibit of mine locomotives slip the wheels and to stand continuous mine service each of these locomotives have mounted on the front end an independent motor driven crab having a drum which holds feet of 38 inch flexible steel rope daily demonstrations are made with another feature of this exhibit will be noted in the great number of photographic reproductions showing the jeffrey machines and locomotives in various situations in large mines all over the country |
