Show THE MINE MANAGER why do so many people attempt to conduct a business about which they know absolutely solute sol lS nothing this is a question which experienced mining men are asking and which numerous mining companies poorer but wiser could answer the most probable reason is that the mining business offers such a fine opportunity for bluffing and in many cases such easy money for the bluffer another probable reason is that most people consider mining as mere childs play a get rich quick scheme requiring no special qualifications however it is a fact that mining is one of the most exacting pursuits in the list of human industries demanding a combination of business knowledge technical training and actual experience A dry goods clerk or a farmer although indispensable in their particular fields make poor excuses as mine managers and yet we find the woods full of the former parading as full fledged mining men another mistake which so many eastern mining companies make is as in putting a young graduate from some technical school in control of mine operation and management he may have the making of a first class man but his lack of actual experience peri ence is a serious handicap there are hundreds of mining failures due to having the wrong man on the job which would have proven wonderful successes had the right man been in the saddle business is business and this applies to mining as well as to other vocations many a manager holds his position through friendship or pull when there are men obtainable who have forgotten more mor ethan than he ever knew A capable mine manager should first of all be a good business man he must have executive ability and be able to gather in all of the loose strings and place each strand in its proper place he must be honest because otherwise his capability would count for naught as his is a position of trust he must be a good judge of hu duj man nature must know how to handle benl 1311 ell to bring forth their best efforts and most luos of all he must know mining from A to za Z buth both theoretical and practical for he fiut gustl at all times know that his subordinates are rightly performing their duties and this lle he cannot do unless he is familiar with every detail the mine manager Is in a class behim by him self and his position cannot be filled indis criminate ly from the ranks of other trades he is made from long experience and training and is not born bom in a minute pel perhaps tal a good way to eliminate these many would be managers would be to from a union but a still better way would be for mining milling companies to ito take greater care in selecting their managing heads |
