Show ELY ON A TRUNK LINE it looks now as if it would be an impossibility for evermore to push ely nevada off the map it is hardly more than six years ago that this old camp was so deserted that two men sitting in front of one of its old ramshackle stores would invariably make a wager as to how long it would be before anyone would pass down the street sometimes they would wait in not very keen anticipation for an hour or two before some discouraged and disconsolate individual would down the stretch of littered and ill kept road which thought camp loyalty and courtesy was designated as a street it is different now and ely for years practically abandoned and almost without hope for the future unless it might be at the final resurrection is now a greater camp than even goldfield in its most glittering days and is now the hottest liveliest and most progressive place in the great commonwealth mon wealth of nevada it was not so very long ago that ely was almost as inaccessible as the north pole to reach it a traveler was obliged to put up with stage conveyance from eureka and the trip to took ok a night and a day later on when the copper resources of the district began to attract attention and when the ad vance guard of the crowd who really made it possible for ely to spring from obscurity into prominence had arrived an auto line was put on between the camp and currie on th the e southern pacific and this mode of travel in due course of time giving way to the advent of the iron horse over the nevada northern ely began to feel that it really had a taste of metropolitan life the taste was pleasant to this long sequestered locality and how that the little town has grown into a bustling city with a copper output from its mines and smelters shelters sm elters with such well known camps as bingham and butte a cry has gone out for more and better railroad facilities and these evidently will soon be supplied for some time past there has been talk of the western pacific running daily trains from salt lake to ely such a schedule would have been a boon to the camp of lely ely but may never be a reality and for the reason that a through line running from salt lake though the deep creek country is in contemplation and should be a reality this road without doubt will prove to be a direct connection with the road that is in projection from ely to goldfield connecting there with the tonopah and tidewater to the coast to los angeles As i i well known the moffat road from denver is likely to enter salt lake during the coming year thus completing the chain which will place ely on a trunk line instead of being the southern terminal of a branch road then too there is talk of building from ely south to pioche and this will in a probability be constructed in the event of the installation of a lead smelter at ely thus giving that camp direct connection with a big silver lead pro ducting section with these roads constructed and anop in operation era tion ely will be on a railroad schedule which will give it easy access to the great financial centers of the western slope salt sait lake city los angeles and san francisco while for itself it can claim that it is one of the greatest copper producing camps in the west and cinch the claim by a sworn affidavit ely has been a long time getting there but it seems now as if she had arrived 0 |
