Show THE OUTLOOK we are obliged to confess that the nut outlook at the present time is not quite so bright as it was earlier in the year there are several reasons rea zons tor this but there are no indications in the country that will lead one to look for anything serious this is undoubtedly the natural readjustment which is taking place and within the next few months and possibly within a few weeks we are likely to see a more settled and an d promising condition one of the principal causes for the present unrest is the uncertainty regarding the adjustments these changes however are being discounted and when the found that they have been more than discounted and we shall see a quick reaction adion re another cause for the present period of depression and inactivity is found in the steel situation there has been for some time an unsettled condition as to prices many grades of steel have already been cut and there are prospects of still further declines in prices of various grades of steel the market is likely to remain open independent companies are out after business and the united states steel company is meeting the various prices manufactures of steel are confident that there will be a reduction of from 30 per cent to 50 per cent in the this in in connection with the cut in the price of s teel has had its effect eff act on the stock market and in fact throughout the general industrial market notwithstanding ding the facts as above stated regarding the steel situation there are indications which point to an early improvement and activity the C B Q railway has already ordered twenty five locomotives from the baldwin locomotive works of pennsylvania the new york central has placed an order for tons of steel rails to be delivered from now until the first of august the order was placed among four steel companies the dominion dominion iron steel company has received an order for tons ions of steel rails for the grand trunk pacific railroad the chicago steel el mills have already sold in march tons of steel plates and the mills of eastern pennsylvania have disposed of tons all these orders have been placed since the ath of mai march maich ch the reduced prices of steel are beginning to make themselves felt financiers are looking forward wit considerable anxious expectation to kno inov what the props crops of the year will be ther thera is nothing at present to indicate any anything thin to detract from the expectation of large crops if there should be a heavy yield we shall see during the last half of this year a very considerable revival in all industrial lines already there is anticipation of higher prices for wool the copper situation does not yet show the improvement that one naturally expected the surplus on hand is now around pounds and this is being added to daily some companies can hardly make any profit above expenses and development on the present prices of copper therefore we may naturally look for some reduction of the output until there is an improvement in the demand the financial barometer stood at the close of business on march ath at the highest point reached this year was on january 2nd and when the barometer touched it then fell away to which low point was touched on february |
