Show PIONEER ACTOR JOiNS MAJORITY Henry E Bowring V Veteran of Utah Stage Dies Suddenly at Brigham i CROSSED PLAINS IN 1856 BUILT THEATRE IN SALT LAKE AND LIVED HERE FOR YEARS Henry E Bowring one of pIoneer actors and theatrIcal men died Saturday night at Brigham City ills His death came unexpectedly For many years he has been in at BrIg BrIgham Brigham ham and the day before his death he spent at his store stare Mr BowrIn spent hIs youth and middle life Ilfe in the amusement business There is no town in Utah where he has not Dot at times appeared in old familiar f plays His last appearance was about 4 two years ago agor r Built Early Theatre Here HereIn I In the early days of Utah Mr Bow BowrIng Bowring rIng built a small theatre on the lot where he lived on East First South street treet in Salt Lake ake The scenery for forthe forI I the theatre was designed and painted by W C Brigham Young so tradition runs vIsited the little show 1 house and after the performance re remarked remarked marked We must build a great theatre here because the people demand amuse amusements ments In Came Across the Plains Mr BowrIng was a native or of Strat Stratton Stratton ton England He was born March U 11 1822 He crossed the ocean cean in 1866 6 having been converted to the Mormon faith in England He em emigrated emIgrated to Utah on foot and p after him a small handcart containing I his infant son sonI I When he stepped off the Liverpool steamer in Boston he had but l cent In hIs pocket Nothing daunted he made the journey across the continent He dragged the handcart from Iowa CIty Ia to Salt Lake a distance of 1300 miles Leaves Large Family TI Mr Ir Bowring had four wives at one onetime I time but none of them survive him He leaves seventeen children thirty seven grandchildren and seven seen great f grandchildren Until 18 1877 7 he be lived in inI I Salt Lake and conducted a leather and harness store here That year he re removed removed moved to Brigham City where he re resided resided sided until the time of his death Soy Sev Several eral of his children live here His funeral will be held in Brigham I tomorrow afternoon at 1 and will be conducted in the church of which he e was a devoted adherent |
