Show Itcmnrltublc Case. Evansville, Ind., 13. Edward Ley-er, Ley-er, a German farmer, buicided Tuesday Tues-day evonieg by meana of an unknown agency, probably hydrocyaniue acid furnished by his wife. Ho had been convioted of poisoning the cistern of Frederick Cook, nnd thus causing the death ol Mrs. Cook and poison-id poison-id several others. Hia counael proved that though the cistern was poisoned, yet the Btomach of the deceased de-ceased upon analyzation showed no poison, and contended that poison had been put iu tho cistern after her death by an enemy of Leyei. The prosecution proved by eminent medi-oal medi-oal authority that the presence of poison in the stomach was not necessary neces-sary evidence of the fact. Lcyer w:w sentenced to the penitentiary for lite, which made him gloomy anJ nioroae. Tne coroner's jury returned a verdict accordinely. Today his son, who was under joint indictment, fled, but wrote back confessing the deed and exculpating his fiilbur. It is considered con-sidered a moat remarkable case in all ita phases, I |
