Show Suicide. Dauiel P. Bell, askillnd mechanic, committed suicide in hi rtlu i the Valley house yeatmUy mummy, shooting himself through the head. Bell had been suffering (or .some time with a cancer under his jaw, which had been pronounced incurable. He hd been in San Francisco f.-ir medical treatment, and hia physicians informed in-formed him that ha ouly hud a short lime to live. He came up from tho bay on Wednesday, having previously arranged for his wite, who rt-id8 in Utah county, to meet him here. He appeared cast down and denpondunt, but in conversation with his wife and others gave no intimation that he intended to destroy himself. In tiie evening after conversing at considerable length with Mrs. Bell, as to hia condition, etc., they bade each other good niijht aud retiied to bed, occupying seperate apartments in the hotel. About six o'clock yesterday yester-day morning, Mr. Bell was discovered lying on the bed, with a bullet hole through his bead. The pistol was by his side, aud also a small mirror, which it is th ught he held in one band while arranging the weapon that the shot might prove faul. The muzzle of the pistol was placed close to the head, which probably accounts for the fact that no one heard the report of the pistol. It appears (hat Bell had previously swallowed a heavy dose of morphine, which he subsequently subse-quently threw up. He then executed bis purpose of killing himself as above stated. He lelt a letter stating the raasona why be took his life, the causes being his extreme sufficing from the cancer, the impossibility of ejecting a cure, and bis certain death 1 in tbe course of a few months at the i farthest. 1 Deceased was a well known master mechanic and mill builder, and a quiet, resDeotable and intelligent gen tleman. He leaves a wile aud one child, in moderate circumstances. He was buried yesterday afternoon with Masonic honors, he being a member in good standing of that fraternity. |
