Show The Government Officials in Dtah. The United States marshal and the distriot attorney ol Utah are in great trouble at present. They are charged with the serieus offmce of obtaining a confession from the un fortunate Mormon wretch Lee under a false promise of protection and pardon, par-don, and with suppressing statements in that con ! s? ion not favorable to the head of the Mo mon church. They, however, declare in refutation of the charge that it is "a job 'put up' by the Mormons aud a Bhyster in their interest." They characterize the i chief complainant, Oilman, as a I liar and unworthy of belief. They insist that they suppressed no part of the confession, nor did they sell ori speculate in it. It is also claimed' that the whole thing is done to procure pro-cure their removal in favor of certain hungry politicians who desire their places. Well, we do not want to be too hard on these officials; but it is worthy ol remark that before Oilman was hoard of the conduct of District Attorney Howard and Marshal Nelson Nel-son was such as to lead us to suspect that something improper was going: an. At the time ot the execution of ! Lse we pointed OUt the Rimm'inna I conduct of these gentlemen and i called the attention ot the department of justice to it, asking, Did it approve of subordinate officers speculating in blood money? J It may he that certain la'.vycra, j ambitious for the official shoes of Howard and Nelson, have taken ad-1 vantage of the suspicions aroused by f our comments to aid their own little; schemes. But it will require Borne-! thing more than a mere naked denial unsworn to by theee officers to convince con-vince the public hereabouts that there is nothing in the very circumstantial charges of GilmAn but lies and perversions. per-versions. Oilman swears to his statement. state-ment. Howard and Nelson content I themselves with a card to the news- j papers. Oilman may be a very bad 1 man, but let us not take as cou- elusive evidence of his ill-repute the unsupported statements of those1 whom he accuses of grave oflencs. t Should it turn out that injustice has j been done to tbe district attorney and the United St.ites marshal of Utah the Herald will cheerfully publish I thoir defence. But in the meantime j it will not accept their own defence as final; neither will it be satisfied with what mny prove a farcical official offi-cial investigation. Tbe Herald is malting its own inquiries and will give the result when reached. New York ! Herald, 13th. I |
