Show St. George Items. St. George, Utah, September 21, 1877. Editors Herald: Siuce the mercury commenced a downward tendency, our spirits and ideas begin to rise, aud we take courage cour-age for motion and action. Though still warm and iummerlike the nighta are quite cool, sometimes almost approaching ap-proaching a frost. Haymaking the fourth crop of lucerne h:s commenced, and with many who cut soon a filth crop will be expected. Foreign aud Old Mission grape are generally ready for wiue-mkiug, but Isabellas are very uneven ripeui and in general there are many yreeu trapes mingled .with the ripe ou the vines, aud it will take a mouth to ripeu them ofl. Like most kinds of fruit, the crop of grapes will be lighter this year than usual. The crop of sorghum is good, and the manufacture of syrup has beeu conimeuced. The health of our citizens is gpu-erally gpu-erally good and yet there are eHVur.n oaaeu of intermittent fever in the emi in Santa Clara and Washington. Threshing of small grain in tuwn U nearly completed. Action is being taken to opeu the old Virgen ditch, by which some bun dreds of acresof fair farm to vineyard land will be watered. Work in the temple ceieed yesterday, yester-day, aud will not probably be resumed for some weeks or montlia. Several new buildings are being erected in the city aud other places improved. Today papers were made out for the sale of two mining claims near Sauta Clara at $4,000 each, aud work is to be commenced on them and the ores treated by what is known us the leaching process. Trado is dull, aud yet people seem to have plenty to eat and wear aud generally enjoy themselves. Silver Reef seems to be advancing in improvements and buildings, aud the poeple there have undiminished faith in the camp, and think that it will gradually and steadily go up to a second Pioche. J. |
