A disptoh received re-ceived this morning from Lewiston via Walla .Walla has news from Joseph's camp to tho eflect that all the Indian women, children and property pro-perty have been removed across the Salmon river, leaving the men free to operate. It is reported that tho In diaus intend to raid upon the settlements settle-ments in Wallawa valley. In- the late fight seventy Indians were engaged, en-gaged, and casualties were four wounded, one perhaps fatally. This news is obtained from a reliable Indian In-dian who came directly from the camp, and is corroborated by the news brought in by the whiteB. The troops will move early in the morning from this post, commanded by Gen eral Howard in person. A. L. Page with his company of twenty five volunteers will go with thd troops. We do not hear of any more settlers being massacred. The soldiers lie were they wero killed, their bodies stripped and mutilated. Father Cotaldo came in this morning from a mission with the Coeur de Alene chief to assure General Howard that bis people would remain friendly. The excitement is subsiding and the Bet-tiers Bet-tiers returning to thair homes. |
