Show Alarblchead u Victim to Ihe Uro l-'ieuU. Boston, 25. A fire in Marblehead this morning destroyed nearly the entire business portion of the town.. The fire began in the stable of the Hathway house, and sproad to the hotel and other buildings. All the large shoo manufacturies were burnt. Three ore in ruins. These were mostly largo wooden buildings, filled wita machinery and furnishing employment em-ployment to hundreds of mon and women. Tho eastern railroad depot, six or seven passenger cars and a number of freight cars burned. Over forty dwelling houses were consumed, and the occupants saved but a very small portion of their furniture, and! their lamilUB only the clothes they had on. Seventy-two buildings in all. are consumed. It is impossible to estimate thn loss or the insurance. The fire is now under control. In a lew brief hours the flames had destroyed two-thirds of the old town, and leit without prospects of employment employ-ment lully three-quarters of the male and lemale workers of Marblehead. One-half of the buildings aro destroyed, de-stroyed, including barns, lactones and dwelling houses. Loss estimated at not less thun half a million dollars. |
