A committee of ladies representing the Women's Temperance Temper-ance union, waited on Mayor Prince, to-day, with a petition that no intoxi oatin liquors be used at a banquet to be given in honor of President Hayes by the city of Boston. The mayor said be haJ been studying the subject thirty years and knew the desire of the prohibilioniits cannot be accomplished for the reason that it is not right that it should be. I approve of the moderate use of wine and liquor and as executive ot the city ot Boston I have a duty to perform at the com-iag com-iag banquet, and on similar occasions, lue city of Boston desires that every courtesy shall ba extended to the president, and I am determined that nothing shall be left undone which atiould contribute to the proper festivities fes-tivities of the banquet. It is customary custom-ary on similar eceasions to furnish wine aud I shall certainly do so. |
