Show .Seligman's Response to Jude IliUon. NeW York, 22. Joseph Seligman publishes another letter in response to Hilton's statement in the Times. In it he says: "You aay Seligman is spoiling for a fight with you because A. T. Stewart & Co. formerly bought neaily all of their foreign exchauge from him and have now discontinued to do so. How ridiculous. If I had to fight all the people who do not buy my exchange I Bhould have to fight forty-lour aud three-quartir millions out of forty-five million in the United States. You aay Mr. Stadler and other Jewa importuned Mrs. Stewart to direct some share of tho eBtate lunds to Hebrew charities. How foolish to make that request, when they knew that the bulk of the estate was di rue ted in another direction in exclusion of nearly all other charily. Now comes the most ridiculous part of your defence. You do not object to IheHeb.ews or Israelites, but you don't want Jews, especially no trade Jewa. You ought to know that certain cer-tain people 4,000 years ago introduced monotheism among the heathens of Asia, your ancestors for aught I know, and that there never was any distinction made in the above names except by bigots like Ferdinand and Isabella, some of the pope's of the fifteenth century and a sapient ex-judge ex-judge in the nineteenth century, who wants to make that nation repulsive. Had you lived 300 years ago you might have succeeded in erecting ghettos lor those persecuted people. What do you moan by a trade Jew? If trade is not respectable, why have you changed the ermine for the yardstick? yard-stick? I contend that trade may be conducted honorably and respectably. 01 course, it is not always eo conducted, con-ducted, and more is the pity, j would advise you to join Professor Ad-ler'a Ad-ler'a society lor ethical culture, where everybody, irrespective ol faith or creed, is welcome to listen to a tec-lure tec-lure whioh inculcates the tolerance of humanity, modesty and gentlemanly gentle-manly bearing, and whioh will, I feel sure, render you a wiser, better man and a more popular merchant; but I confess that ae a hotelkeeper in this enlightened, tolerant and progressive pro-gressive republic you will never do. |
