Representatives Luttrell and Page had an interview with tbe president yesterday in regard to Chinese immigration immi-gration on the Pacific coast. They presented tbe resolution that was recently re-cently passed by the California legislature legis-lature on the subject, and told tbe president that both of the political parties in the Btate were a unit on this question. The presidont stid that the subject had been carefully considered by tbe cabinet, and while be sympathized with the people of California, yet the Chinese bad treaty rights which this government mustjreapect. He would, however, call the attention of congress to tbe subject sub-ject and suggest that negotiations be opened with tbe Chinese government with a view of fixing some limitation on emigration from that country. |
