Show Sidewalks. Wo have a most beautiful city in almost every particular but sidewalks, and these are as varied as numerous. There is every kind. Some are un-evon, un-evon, not graded properly, and in many instances not entitled to the name of sidewalks. Many, especial- ly after a little damp spell, have a zig-zag, serpentine appearance, the result of the weary pedestrians "picking "pick-ing their way." In several places the abandonment of the sidewalk for the middle of the street has to be resorted re-sorted to, the latter being the better for foothold. "Roundabout ways for the nearest" are made on many blocks, for rods and rods, and beaten tracks through the street centres formed in order to avoid a stick in the mud. And many and oft are the Milesian blessings muttered by the puzzled footman as he struggles aloDg, straining like a ship in a heavy sea, through the clayey, sticky, plentiful plen-tiful mud. They should be heard by the sidewalk owners, and a repairing of sidewalks would ahortly follow. Clay, unmixed with better stuff, composes com-poses the walking space of two or three dozen blocks in the lower wards, which, after a thaw ora rain, renders pedestrianism a laborious and pain ful feat. And the owners of theBe obnoxious ob-noxious and disagreeable portions of real estate are careless and indiffer-l indiffer-l cat. uf thum are able enougn, but, like the Arkansas traveler, don't feel like turning out when it is wet, and can't see the necessity of it when it is fair. The recent fine spell we have had might have been improved, and the cause for so much, unpleasantness prepared for the next rainfall. The following story is of a Scotchman, who, after returning from Palestine, put the question to a neighbor: " D'ye ken hoo the folk i' Jerusalem keep their streets sae clean?" " Na, na. Hoo ia't?" " Why, ivery ane keeps his ain door clean," was the reply, and if it only would apply to the citizens of the metropolis of the mountains, how happy we should all be I Pitch in, now, and repair your Bidewalka. |
