Show j WATER SERVICE. ; Its Growth Sine April 1st, 1S76. Some Facts and Figures of Interest to the Pablie. It is not generally known to what extent the water services of this city bave been carried. Many entertain the idea that the city U making considerable con-siderable money out of the investment, invest-ment, waile still others are uoder tbe impression that the exp?n.li:ure has been a proQilcaa outlay. Toe former for-mer opinion is pArualiy correct, . tbere being aoaietaiog of a revenue' from it, but ntr.hiog in comparison to tbe expenditure ; wbile in the latter lat-ter bcaei it U whaiiy unfounded. Tue great bentfii derived from the water works is tbe protection against fire, and in this one particular it is just to Btate that the whole outlay has been justified, as it is impossible to say what damage might result if the water works h.id never beeo con slructed. Up to Ire proesnl time tbere have been laid, in different parts of the ci'.y, not less (ban eight miles of water m-itcs. As these have been extended, tbe water service, the only source of revenue from tbe heavy outlay, h9 constantly increased. A few figures concerning this subject will show the actual condition of afhirs, the progress made and the! present status of the water service as regards number and the amount of revenue derived: WATER SERVICES EXPENDITURE. It will be I seen therefrom that tbe laying of tbe water service from the mains to the j curbstones cost $9,167.88, and that ; the total returns only amounted to $13,352.20, leaving a balance of $4,- 184,32 in favor of tbe city above tbe cost of putting in the service pipes alone. Hence, it will be eeen Ibat, as a moneymakiog investment, the water works has not been very profi t table, thougb in the course of time it will become so; but tbe much greater , safety to property in the event of fire and tbe great convenience ' of the service by Long odds counter-balance counter-balance the objections that maybe brought against the system as a paying pay-ing institution, at least for the present. Of course, the figures here given, have nothing whatever to do with the mains in tbe streets, which is an entirely entire-ly separate afiair. Nor do these figures determine the number of water consumers, con-sumers, fi.a in some inatanoes several are supplied from one service pipe. The number of licenses issued for the ourrent six months ia something over 400. |
