Show NoTTTTTHSTAXDiNa the promise-: and hopes of increasing business prosperity pros-perity in eastern cities, this spring, to which the people have been treated, the present condition of affairs does not show any material improvement. The rates of house rents, which are a good criterion of the state of business, instead of improving appear to be foiling foil-ing off. The first of May is renting day in New York, and the real estate agents report the season exceptionally exception-ally dull. The World estimates that some 33 per cent, of the houses on Broadway, between Bowling Green and Union Square, are in the market for rent, and the temporary rentals are made in ruiny caies at a rtduc-: tion of between 30 and i0 per cent, from ordinary rates. The same paper partially accounts for this startling depression by the fact that lower Broadway is no longer the"8hopping" ; strt of New York, the great bulk of the retail trade having moved uptown, up-town, while the wholesale dealers occupy oc-cupy other Is expensive streets. |
