Show THJJ MINT. Tbo maet meeting the other evening even-ing to take action in reference to securing a branch mint for Salt Lake city, waa not a succena in point of enthusiasm. Whilu thoe present, and the Bpeakerd in p trticular, aeemed to have a vague idoa that a mint would be "a good tu-ug to liave," no one waa prepr -il to pre-1 sent facts and figures, or state anything any-thing more definite on the subject than the general proposition that the city is justly enlitL'd to a money coining institution. We can understand under-stand tbia lack of iiiturcm iu the matter. Tbe people realize the true relationa between tbe territories and the geueral government; that the latter lat-ter cares so little for the welfare of the former as to do nothing to aid thorn not absolutely required. The liberality liber-ality of tbe nation towards its "provincial" "pro-vincial" dependencies is by no meauB marked by generosity. Tuis pay uo-atlontion uo-atlontion triatment of the terntorios comes from the (act that we are without with-out political voice or influence; our words have no weight at head quarters, quar-ters, and will not so long ns the prca ent anti-republican policy of tho government ia pursued. However in tbia miut matter ne think more enthusiasm should be manifested, and deeper interest taken. We need not even hope for success unless we show that we are In earnest. Simply asking without showing reason for tho request, and earnestness in the demand, will result only in passing our appeal over in silence, or at beat returning an oxpected refusal. If wo want a mint, let us say ao, and present our claims for preferring the requeat. Another mass-meeting will be held next Thursday evening when it is hoped the enthusiasm manifested wili be equal to the importance of tbe subject. We trust the committee appointed at the last meeting will be prepared with a good showing of laots and figures, that, when presented to tbe powers that be, cannot be eaaily overlooked. Tbe prize is worthcon-tending worthcon-tending for, and if we are not success ful, let it he the injustice of others that defeats us, and not our own lack of effort and euergy. |
