Show New York "San" J.ibel Suit. New York, 4. The trial of the libel suit of Wm. H. Kemblo of Philadelphia Phila-delphia against Charles A. Dana, for publication in tho Hun- of alleged libellous charges affecting the character char-acter of the plaintiff, tho damages being be-ing laid at $50,000. was begun yesterday yester-day in the superior court before Judge CurtiB. The jurors wereseiected with great care, both sides exhausting three challenges and the unusual proceeding of challenging every juror. Before tho case opened efforts were made to settle it without a trial. Tho plaintiff, after thojutywas impanneled, stated that not having brought the suit for the sake of money he was willing, if defendant should make a full retraction, to allow the judgment to bj entered for mere nominal damages. Defendant declined in any case to allow judgment against him, but was willing, if the suit was discontinued, to retract the charge that plaintiff hid received money. This not being satisfactory , the case proceeded. |
