Carpenter ia unquestionably the ablest man Wisconain baa ever bad in tbe senate, and ono of tbe brightest men who has occupied a seat in that chamber of dignified legislators in many yeara. Unfortunately he ib numbered among ' those staScamen i classed as " corruptiouists." Thia fact was never more clearly shown than in hia present personal finances. He ja a poor man, having always spent money recklessly; he ib a most successful lawyer, and claims that hia law-practico yields him n revenue amounting to $50,000 annually; yet he cheerfully gives up thia and nc-cepta nc-cepta a position yielding hut $5,000 a year. It cannot be famo or notoriety thathewantB, for ho posBC-eses them both, and hia profession ia as honorable honor-able aa that of the seuatorship. We can understand how a Sharon may aspire to a seat in the senate chamber; cham-ber; but it ia difficult to Bee bow a poor man like Mati Carpenter will give up $50,000 a yoar for $5,000, unless hia object ia to make up the difference illegitimately. |
