Show ! GBAVE CHABGB 4GAIN8T THE I ATTORNEY GENERAL. j A charge of the gravest character i against Attorney General Williams comes by private sources from New York, and has been, or will be uuinc- d iately, presented to the judiciary-com-! mittce of the Senate; a charge, indeed, which we trust may prove unfounded. It is alleged that Duncan, Sherman fc Co., of New York, won a suit against the Government before the Court of Claims, for four hundred thousand dullard, the c:isg arising out of cotton transactions during war times. The rase was appealed to the Supremo Court; and the charge is that Duncan, Sherman A Co., did not wish to wait for the result, but made out a check for twenty thousand dollars to Mrs. Williams, the understanding being that the appeal would be withdrawn. It is charged that tho check was received re-ceived and the appeal dismissed, put ting three hundred and eighty thousand thous-and dollars in the safe of Duncan, Sherman fc Co., which the Government Govern-ment had to pay. The truth or falsity of this serious accusation, we understand, under-stand, will shortly be put upon proof. If it should be sustained the Attorney General need have no hopes of being confirmed by the Senate as Chief Jus-lice; Jus-lice; if falsely made, the reaction in nis favor will add materially to his in-lluence in-lluence and popularity. |
