The anniversary of tho birthday of the ".Father of his country," occurring occur-ring on Sunday, this year, yesterday was generally observed as the annual day oi honoring the memory of the great man. In this city business was generally suspended, and flags were Hying from many of tho stores, banks and public buildings; but the day wap quietly passed, there being no public demonstration. Throughout the country, and especially es-pecially iu the south, was the day celebrated with more spirit than it had been for years past, or, in fact, siuce the war. These United States cannot do better than honor the memory of the immortal Washington, for it is doubtful, from the present kind of aspirants for high honors, if they will 'soon gaze upon his like again in the Presidential chair. |
