Show Triumph of Science. The Carson Register, of December 23d, relates this incident : "Peace hath her victories no less renowned re-nowned than war," and Science hath her victories no less profitable than Peace. We have heard of a gentleman lir.eely interested in the freighting and lumber business who made something over $2,000 by coulbruKng his business transactions to the prognostications of his barometer during tho three days next preceding the commencement of the late storm. On Friday of last week he discovered the mercury was falling rapidly, and at once telegraphed his agent at Iteno to ship every pound of freight ho could possibly get away. The barometer sharp had a large quantity of lumber up on tho mountains. He impressed every team and man he could find to get ihc lumber down. On Sunday the workmen and teamsters wanted to kuoek of, and said they could finish the job on Monday. The barometer was still sinking, however, and the observer pushed his lumber through on Sunday, and the result was a saving of over $2,000, for on Monday the storm was terrific aud the roads impassable. |
