Show By Telegraph. Critical Position of Garibaldi. Tribunes cablegram. London. f. Your correspondent with Garibald, at Dale, writes on the 1st: Our position becomes daily less tenable. Garibaldi's forces increase but slowly, and a whole battalion is still without arms, owing to inactive indifference or opposition amortg the French authorities, both civil and military. The general commanding com-manding at Be-ancon affects to ignore Garibaldi's existence. An engineer arrived this morning from Ucsancon, with orders to blow up the bridges across the river between Bcsancon and bale, thus cutting off Garibaldi's retreat, re-treat, if ho should be beaten. An expedition ex-pedition sent to examine the bridges found them mined, the officers in charge intending to destroy them the same night. Garibaldi has thrice offered his resignation, but was refused. |
