Show A Sekiocs Matter. The inhabitants inhabit-ants of Kane, Washington, Iron and Beaver counties are threatened with serious Indian troubles. The Nava joes, that warlike tribe of southern In-d In-d ans, that have committed so many depredations on our southern frontier settlements before time, are again on the warpath. Yet there existsa proclamation, proc-lamation, issued by the late Governor, which by c instruction of a court here would make it rebelliou against the United States for the inhab' tains of those counties to assignable and repel the attacks of the savages. In) vies of facts that are of regular occurrence in all the we;i; and in vien of Indian . troubles always being contingencies to be dreaded and prepared for, what shall be said of such an attempt to fasten upou honest, peaceable, loyal men the sti-ma of rebellion, for arming arm-ing and prepaiiug themselves to defend de-fend their homes and their lives against rutbless savages? We have ireited the matter a6 a burlesque up till to-day. Now, it assumes too serious an aspect for that; for the bloody corpses, borne to their tombs in this Territory, victims vic-tims of the Indian's murderous hand, tell us that self-preservation is the Erst law of nature; a law recognized by the constitution; recognized by the laws of the United States, and ignored by an illegal proclamation, and the action of a court that has failed so fa', this Territory, to excite the respe of any intelligent man or woman acquainted with its proceedings. Must our citizens allow themselves to be butchered, or wear the brand of "rebel-," if they reist Indian ag-gresion? ag-gresion? We ask the question of every or any Federal official in thisTer-ritory. |
