The Special Committee appointed to examine anil Keporl on Sewing Machine at the North Carolina State Fair, held at KaUlgh last week, awarded a Gold Medal to the Florence Sewing Machine for the eae and ijuletue of It movements, perfection and large variety of w or k, and lt valuable new features, making ma-king it the moht valuable Sewing Machine for family ne. Parties contemplating the pur-cluie pur-cluie of Sewing Machines are requested re-quested to read the following from the Aew York "Tribune' of Oct. I9tb, 1 S70 i SEWLG MACHINES. We have recently had occasion to make aome inquiries iuto the progress of improvement improve-ment id the mechanism of sewing machine?, and were nut a littte'surprised to learn that the central idea in the Drat invention the BQimle still holds its place, though many dtttiiiipts have been made to supercede it. The ti utile, in combination with the needle, is dtill the means used to form the stitcn. in the leading machines, and we find that the growth ol trade is chiefly with theehuttle-uiUjK theehuttle-uiUjK machines. lae improvements that are taking firm , hold in practical use are, therefore, necessarily necessa-rily in connection with the shuttle, either in the detail of the shuttle itself, or in other parti of the machine connected with it. to cause tne whole to operate more perfectly and uniformly, and to simplify its use- . . , . i Many important gains in this direction, made since the tirst great invention, are un-i un-i doubteuly embodied in the "Florence" ma-chide; ma-chide; and we recommend our readers to 1 carefully inspect the "Florence" before making ma-king a choice. The points peculiar to this machine are: An unusual amount of money is spent in maKing the "Florenee," thereby securing the best material .steel. for instance, where others use cast-iron ), and the . nest tin sh ot ' important part Uhe shuttle, for example, being rigidly rejected if it varies from the ; standard l-2,0wth of an inch I) It is constructed con-structed on the simplest scientific principles, entirely dispensing with the cogs, and cams, ' and links wnich so often get perversely out of order and sorely perplex every one but the practiced machinist by their unaccountable unaccount-able freaks. The "Florence" is so easily managed, and its use is eo readily learned, . that an ordinary girl of ten has sense and muscle enough to run it perfectly. Tnelock-stitch, Tnelock-stitch, as made by the "Florence" is very regular ana perfect, very strong and elastic, and is drawn iuto the tabric evenly, grad-; grad-; uall, exactly, without jerking, and without causing the seam to pucker, or straining the thread so as to endanger its breaking; continently, con-tinently, vei y fine threads and Lignt labrics can be used. Besides this, the ' Flerence" tin ail but the cheapest styles) also makes three additional stitches a double lock, a single knot and a double knot which are , stronger and more elastic than any other stitch, and which are made by no other ma-, ma-, caine. The "Florence" is the only machine : that his a feversiule .eed, whereby the di-' di-' rection of the sewing can be instantly i changed without stopping the work, thus enab.ing the operator to quilt er embroider with unusual tacihty, to sew backwards and ' easily strengthen a seam wherever desired, t and, finally, by a few repeated stitches, to lasten ends in the quickest and strongest , way. It is the only machine that has a self-j self-j adjusting shut tie-thread tension, which I works so per fe.-tly that the operator can run ; across the i eaviest seams and sew the finest linen and the thickest broadcloth in imme- diate succession withont breaking the thread ; and wiihout changing the needle, stitch or tension- Tho "Florence"' draws the thread into the cloth with unequaled precision and certainty, by means of an ingenious automatic auto-matic '"take-np" wheel, which disposes of the slack thread left after the stitch with an , accurate promptness that prevents aj snarl-; snarl-; ing or dropping of stitches, and allows the operator to sew backward, or to run off the cloth and on again, with perfect impunity. 1 It has an improved eiastio hemmer, eiclu-: eiclu-: siveiy its own, which managed with ease, 1 and will make a hem of any width on any material. It not only makes a perfect gather and sews it to a band at one operation, but . it hems, and binds, and fells, and quilu, and ! cords, and tucss, and gathers, and braids , without basting. Such special provision is ; made aga:nst injurious wear that tne "Flor-i "Flor-i ence" is claimed and guaranteed by the Corn-pan Corn-pan j to last twice as long without repair aj any other shuttle machine in tae market, without the Slightest diaculty. Every pari of the '"Florence" is so perfectly and perma- nently adjusted, and it hasso few joints and points of friction, that it runs witn the ut-' most ease, Tiia np?oe is set and threaded, and the stitch is lengthened, shortened, or rererstrd with the utmost ut-most eae. In using the "Florence" neither the wori nor the operator's dress is liable to j oe soiled. The "Florence" wiia all these o aims to superiority, sells at the same price as otner nrst-class machines. It has lately been revised by the author, and materially improved by tho addition of much imrorunt matter, giv iog all the Ute j laws and I'libliihed divisions down to lx;'. ; Ibis book ha, up to the present time, reached reach-ed a larger sale than any other work of the kind in thij cuuntry. Ihii f-iot may be men- ' tioned a evidence of iu superior merit, lis excellence consists both in the matter em- braced, and the arrangement or class itica-tion itica-tion of subjects. In the collection of matter contained in the woi k it is intended to give all the statute law and the general principles of the common com-mon law iu connection therewith, which a justice of the peace, polios magistrate, con-stableor con-stableor coroner will require iu discharging their duties, or that a practicing lawyer will need for reference in ordinary esses, or that may be required for the information of every business man. This-will entirely supersede the necessity for reference to tho volumes ol the statutes. 'lhe arrangement of the work is inothodi-cal, inothodi-cal, and cf the essence of ita value, presenting present-ing each subject in iu order and in its proper relation with others. The plan of the arrangement ia entirely original with the author, being the result of study and practical experience. It has long been a subject of general remark that the author' has, in this work, presented tho law with a 1 clearness and simplicity of style which renders ren-ders the whole ali-o plain to the common understanding as to tho more advanced law yer. The justico of the peace, police magistrate, constable, and coroner will find in this book all the necessary forms and instructions instruc-tions in regard to every branch of his duty. The practicing lawyer will find in it, collected col-lected and arranged in convenient form, all tho statute law and decisions, with reference to adjudicated cses applicable in ordinary practice. The business man will find in it a complct e collection of forms required in tho transaction transac-tion of business. Students of tho law will likewise find this a very valuable work for perusal and reference, refer-ence, as containing the general principles of the common law, clearly stated, in connection connec-tion with the ordinary branches of juris prudence. pru-dence. The .following brief reference to tho contents con-tents of this work will afford in some.dtgree an idea of iu peculiar merits. The book is divided in five parts, the subject of each being be-ing methodically arranged in chapters or appropriate ap-propriate subdivisions, as follows : j Part 1.
